I never knew there were different species of them. I know some other gardeners in colder zones that have had their lilies decimated by voles, but honestly, I have never heard of as bad a problem as you have had. Eating trees, and shrubs! So maybe it is a different kind of vole. I don't envy you, and I'm glad you found a solution.

You're welcome, Polly,
Here is the link to determine what type of vole you may have:

I posted this on another thread, but thought it should appear under the "Voles" heading, as well.

Before we got the bait system, I was very cautious
.
We have no pets, and a fenced in back yard, where the bait system was to be installed.

However, we have a dear neighbors kitty we feed and did not want any harm to come to him nor the other neighbors dogs, so I checked with the owner of the bait company.
The bait is tiny coated seed. I was concerned that the cat could eat a vole that had consumed the bait and get sick or die. I was told they would have to eat a huge amount of voles in a short period, so this scenario was impossible.

I am happy to report all the neighborhood animals are healthy and happy 6 months after installation and eradication of the voles.

That's my experience

Today we were doing garden cleanup in the backyard. I noticed a few soft spots in the ground(usually a sign of underground tunnels). I freaked out! We need to do the apple sign test, because they may have moved around and left the other bait stations alone. Need to do this BEFORE any bulb planting. They are a scourge!!! Angry
