Love the Iris reticulata, thats one of the spring bulbs I want to add. So far I have never tried them.

My crocus are blooming but I am embarraseed to say that I have never ever taken a picture of them. I take pictures of just about everything in the garden but never of the crocus!

This fall I want to get crocus and add more to the garden. I haven't added any in years. In fact yesterday I was looking at the confusing, to me, array of crocus available at Brent and Beckies Bulbs. I only ordered some orange ones there called ZWANENBURG because the color was too much to resist. But I only have ever bought the bags of mixed colors locally. So I looked around and did some web research to find that what I really want is some of the early ones (Chrysanthus) because I don't have them and more of the large Dutch flowering ones, which is what I had bought.

So I will wait and get some mixes from Van Engelen when they update and I can order for the fall. With get the little iris there too.

Did you see that Brent and Becky's fall catalog is already open? With discounts if you order before a certain time.

Yes, I saw and I already ordered Tulips and Daffodils last night. I have a thread here on the bulbs forum about what I ordered from Brent and Beckies.

Rita, you're gonna love the C.crysanthus types! They bloom before the C.vernus (large flowered Crocus), and increase prolifically. The tommies are awesome too.

I went out with the camera yesterday and am kicking myself- I missed the Crocus! Just a couple of days ago they were gorgeous, all fading now :-(. I'm like a reptile, just don't want to move around outside if its not warm, LOL.

Pauletta, no need to apologize, those Iris reticulata are lovely, and great companions for Crocus Smiling

That's short for Crocus tommasinianus, and there are several varieties, most in the lavender and purple color range. They're so sweet, and are said to be less attractive to bunnies and other rodents than other Crocuses. This is the straight species:

I don't have a problem with squirrels messing with my crocus and hardly any bunnies here. Thanks for the link.

Ever planted over 10,000 Crocus that bloomed the first year and the next year not one flower?

What could have happened?

Wow! Bert, that's terrible! I can't imagine rodents finding every single one of that many. Could there have been a period of standing water in the area that caused rot?

Are they planted in a lawn? I wonder if the foliage was cut too short or too soon? Seeing healthy foliage this year makes me think there's hope of seeing a nice showing next year.

Yes, they are in a lawn. If they were cut shortly after flowering and too short, may have taken away some bulb growth, however you would think that a certain amount of bulbs should have produced a flower. Could a pre-emergent have done something? I am puzzled.

The way a pre-emergent works I don't think that would have caused a problem for bulbs, everything points to the no blooming being caused by mowing the foliage too soon and too low from what I have read.

Last year after blooming or this year prior to blooming?

Mowing the foliage too soon and too low after blooming the first year would cause the crocus not to bloom the next year, is my understanding.

I agree with Seedfork, I believe pre-emergent only effects seed germination. I have found newly planted bulbs typically are a bit later to bloom and develop that first spring, so the foliage may have been right at the stage where it was building up food reserves when the lawn was mowed. I suspect the foliage is doing its job earlier this year, and will have restored the bulbs before mowing this time around. Although I do find it a little odd that there wasn't at least a stray bloom here and there.
