I believe it is pineapple guava. here is a link:

Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana)

I had one for 20+ years at my previous home (tree) and the neighbor had theirs trimmed like a hedge. It really is a lovely plant (and makes a good jelly, too).

Thank you very much! It was rattling around in my memory from quite some years ago --- 25 or more. I did tell my hubs ---- Guava? of some kind? And then I was thinking of the name Feijoa but could not get it to meld in my mind. All I could remember was that J that sounds like an H.

Funny you should mention Feijoa. That's what we all called it 40 or 50 years ago. I actually was surprised to see it classified as Acca as it was still feijoa to me nodding

We lived in the Tallahassee area 25/30 years ago & I was secretary for a landscaper. He used Feijoa all the time & called it Feijoa. Botanical names change all the time --- sometimes I think just to mess us up. Hilarious!

I am glad to hear that its not just me or the area I lived in (So Cal). I have this vague memory of Sunset referring to it as Feijoa, too, back in one of their garden books in the 60's or 70"s?? (ooh, just typing that makes me sound sooooo old Rolling on the floor laughing ).

I just checked in the current Sunset National Guide and they list it as Feijoa sellowiana with an aka of Pineapple Guava and, alternatively, Acca sellowiana - but they have no listing for the Acca. Also, unlike the db entry listing here that shows height to be 8-10', the Sunset Guide lists it as 18-25' tall and wide (which is what I remember it to be when grown as a tree). So, it will remain Feijoa to me nodding

The one I had at the last property was quite old and about 10' tall....shrub-like. I usually can't tell how large something will get here unless it's mentioned in Sunset because some things will get twice the size here as elsewhere.

The fruit is great, and the flowers are edible, too!
