I am in zone 8b(Southern New Mexico) and am planting this aptenia in a filtered light, semi-protected bed with very sandy soil. Does anyone know if I will have problems with it overwintering? Our lows are in the upper 20's (27-29)Thumb of 2013-05-17/valleysdaughter/8e6e33

i am going to guess that it will not only be fine but might be slightly to largely invasive, i would recomend that you save small amount to grow inside if its a plant you do not want to lose

I've read in a couple of places that its hardiness zone is more 10 and 11 but has been reported by a nursery to have survived in zone 8 without protection. I would not take any chances. You can definitely follow Mark's good advice to be safe and save some cuttings. If you choose to leave outside, they should be protected from frost. I would buy frost cloth or N-sulate to cover the plant. When I was in SFe, NM, I covered some of my plants with both N-sulate and shade cloth. It was easier to shake off snow from the shade cloth than the N-sulate cloth.

Thanks for posting this, I didn't know that is the name of this plant. I have a few of them growing as ground cover in full sun under my small oak tree. This is very easy to propagate. I sometimes cut a 2 inch cuttings with blooms and plant them with my succulents because they continue to bloom and root easy.

I agree with everyone about the winter care. Mine stays outside uncovered but we do not have below 20s.
