And it sure is trying, too! I'm pretty sure it originates in my neighbor's yard and if it wasn't so shady and dry it would be everywhere in that area. There are a couple of lovely red flowers 'way up in the top of the oak tree right now.
Luckily I have a garden helper who comes once a week, and chases it back to where it came from on a regular basis. Amidst Virginia creeper, pigeon pea, balsam pear, air potato and the wild grape vines, there's lots to keep us busy around here!
Thunbergia has a great color.
This one Passiflora quadrangularis, limped along for 2 years giving me one flower per year, but this year it has shown it's true nature and is now climbing up into the bamboo stand.

Lovely, Gigi. I even know what they smell like, just returned from an errand to Lowe's to buy pots and they have a whole bunch of 'Divine' for sale there, in bloom.
Of course I walked by and sniffed every one. Can't get enough of that lovely perfume.
Here's Philo. Gloriosum with its velvety leaves coming along, and a baby Clerodendron 'Pagoda' putting up its first pagoda.

I have wanted to post some photos of what's blooming here for me but have been snowed under! We bought this house less than 3 months ago so I've inherited some plants ~~~~ some I want & some I don't! And I have planted some. I recently became a member of the Suwanee Valley daylily society. I had attended their annual show & sale. Oh MY! 2 fan bundles of Salter hybrids for $5 per bundle. I came home with 16 bundles.
I have been without garden for 2 years while we made this move from zone 10 Fl. to zone 8 Fl. Can you say gardening withdrawal? BIG TIME!!!!
I know I'm supposed to cut scapes off the new dl's & let them grow until next year but did I tell you I have been gardenless for TWO years? And I had a BAD case of gardening withdrawal??? Well, I just couldn't do it. I NEED to see something blooming that I planted. We have a long grow season here so I'm sure they'll do just fine despite my breaking the rules. That's 1 reason I love dl's so much ~~~ they are tougher than nails!
Purchased 5/18 & this is the second bloom on Desert Blush
A huge glazed pot I planted w/ Passionate Rainbow gaura, annual Sallyfun blue salvia, gaillardia Gallo Peach & not blooming yet Bonfire annual salvia I grew from seed. It's starting to fill out the pot & look nice. The male ruby throated hummer makes regular visits.
The area of NOID dl's that came with the house & close ups of a couple
Purple lantana just starting to bloom - came with the house
Gaillardia Gallo Peach I put in the bed
Lantana I planted
NOID dl I had holding in a sweater box for when it could be planted in a permanent home. I didn't like it before & almost threw it out. Now that it's in a permanent home the color & form have improved considerably & I am liking it more & more.
Liatris I planted are budding up & it won't be long for blooms
In a wild area that I want to remain wild & be filled with wildflowers ~~~ volunteer rudbeckias have begun to put on a grand show
Blueberries are ripening
Gerbera daisy
Summer Cloud delphinium in another glazed pot along with bonfire salvias that aren't blooming size yet
Impatiens
Rainlilys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A different variety of rudbeckia I bought. I have yet to plant it out in the bed
Geranuim
Mums
Caladiums around the Sycamore tree
Lorapetalum continues to bloom since we moved in

Thanks Elaine you always find nice plants. Most of my other plumerias are not blooming yet. This is very late plumeria bloom season for me. Last year, I had plenty of blooms around this time.
Ann, beautiful garden / bloom start!!! Would love to see more posts from your garden. One of these days I will pick up and plant day lilies.
Thanks Gigi. Fl. has a lot of the top hybridizers growing dl's here. I got into dl's down in zone 10. So many people have no idea they will grow down there, in fact, they will argue with you about it! They are wonderful for a xeriscape yard & in your zone as was in our zone 10 most of them forget if they are early season bloomers or mid season or late or whatever ~~~ they just start blooming in spring & stop in mid fall.

Fabulous, Ann. You're going to have a wonderful garden, and soon, too! What a great buy you got on those daylilies. Gigi, I think the cold month we had in March really set back the plumerias. Mine had buds in February that blasted in March.
I've had mixed success with daylilies, but these red ones do just what you said, Ann. They start blooming in April, and go until November. A few others have just petered out for me, but I'm going to try some more in the same bed with the red ones.

Elaine, those look like Ming Toy which I had down south. In fact, they were my 1st dl's. They make proliferations (baby plants on the flower stalk). They were like the energizer bunny --- they just kept going!
I will mention that I got Stella D'Oro & was very unhappy w/ them. I think they needed to have more cold. If you get any more; look for Siloam Double Classic ---- another great performer for me down there & fragrant too! Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic')

Sure does look like it, Ann but I haven't noticed it making any plant proliferations on the flower stalks although they sure do clump up fast. I've divided them many times, and given them away, too. I have mine planted on the north side of the house, so they get the maximum amount of winter chill that I can give them. They're in the shade of the house all winter, and jump into bloom as soon as the sun gets over the house. I tried 'Joan Senior' a large white, and a couple from Home Depot. Joan did ok through the two years when we had cold winters, but has completely gone now. The others just petered out, too.
That Siloam Double Classic is gorgeous. D'you remember where you got yours? There are a lot of Siloam hybrids, it seems. Are they all heat tolerant, do you think?

After my brother passed away and we inherited his home in FL, I found a tag in the yard for Siloam Double Classic -- I also hoped that one day one of the daylilies (minus any identification) that we moved to our daylily bed would bloom and it would be Siloam Double Classic. No luck so far. It is a beautiful plant and am just going to have to get one as I really love the color, not to mention having a fragrant one!

I got Ming Toy & Siloam Double Classic at the same time at the only nursery in our area that sold dl's at the time. That was Giverney Gardens in Jupiter. I DO know where they both came from though b/c the tags on both said Sarasota Growers. I did call them to see if the were wholesale only or if they would ship to me. Well, they wouldn't ship & I wasn't driving to Sarasota so didn't pursue if they would sell to the public if one went there.
Elaine, that's exactly what Ming Toy did --- start blooming in April (sometimes late March) & went until November. Siloam Dbl. Classic performed great too & multiplied rapidly as well & both dl's showed rust resistance. The Siloam ran a little later than Ming by maybe 3 weeks & would stop a little earlier by another 3 or 4 weeks. Of course both would have short periods of non bloom but when you have big clumps someone is always blooming.
I too am missing Siloam & Ming Toy as I was not able to bring them with me --- didn't know I wouldn't be back. I had sent my cousin in San Antonio fans of each & this fall she is going to send fans back to me.
Elaine, I don't know how good you are at charming but it would certainly be worth a shot to go to Sarasota Growers & see if they will sell to you or ask who they sell to locally. If they have Siloam then maybe you could get a dbl. shot & send Jean a fan.
I know that what does good for me does good for my cousin & vice versa. She has Little Business & it does great for her. I will get a short list together & post it when I get a chance. Mostly ppl say that we in Fl. should grow evergreens but Siloam puts the lie to that as she is a dormant which was semi evergreen for me. AND some of the top notch hybridizers have their gardens right there in Fl. & they grow everything from dormants to evergreens.
I do know that Siloam hybrids have a reputation for being very tough dl's & the Dbl. Classic sure proved it to me.
I have to run for now but will be back later.

and rainlily citrina blooming for the first time this year
that things are late this year. Usually the dl's begin earlier & so do the rainlilys.

Here is a link to the American Hemerocallis Society --- the page for Florida. You can scroll down to see the individual clubs to see if one is in your area. That would be a great place to start if you are interested in dl's. The club I joined has annual dues of $5 & the first year is free. When you go to meetings, you get a free dl each time you go plus you get points which you rack up for attendance & help with sales & this, that & the other. Those points can be used to buy dl's. There are always dl's for sale at the meetings & they usually run $5. Then they have auctions & you can bid on ones. They have daylily garden tours & picnics & all kinds of events. Every club has a sale once a year. You can meet other dl lovers & ask them if they have Siloam Dbl. Classic & they may even offer you a fan or 2 or a clump for free or for a small price. They can also tell you the ones that have performed well for them. http://www.daylilies.org/AHSre...
You can also buy dl's on The Lily Auction http://daylily.com/cgi-bin/auc...
You can get some great deals there on dl's you would not otherwise afford. On the dl forum, the Lily Auction is referred to as the LA & here is a thread talking about experiences with buying from different vendors on the LA. The thread "LA Sellers" in Daylilies forum
Here is a link to Earlybird daylilys website. Robin Calderon owner. She is wonderful! And if you order from her you can be sure you will receive MORE than you ordered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is closing b/c of the terrible drought that has been ongoing for years now in Kansas where her garden is. You can read about it on her home page. I can assure you the plants you get from her will be healthy, giant & tough! She doesn't have Siloam Dbl. Classic but if you put Siloam in the search box, you will see she has a number of Siloam hybrids. She also sells on the LA under the name Earlybird. She has a great deal right now on 75 mixed fans of spiders & UFO's.
Another great place for info. is on our own dl forum here on ATP. Join us over there & just lurk or ask questions or whatever. http://garden.org/forums/view/...
I would gladly share Siloam when I get it from my cousin but I'm sure there will not be enough to share.

Gigi, not all dl's are fragrant but some are & there are even some that bloom at night.

Yikes, I'd have problems finding room for 5 daylilies, let alone 75! Most of my sunny areas are taken up with the veggie garden. Thanks for all the info, Ann.
I have a lot of shade under big oak trees all around the house, but these heliconias bloom and ramble around even there! This one has wandered out into the pathway.
The variegated spiral ginger is starting to bloom, some had a lot of variegation, some nearly none. Oops, aphids on that last one, getting out the soapy water spray.
