Stormy, I don't really know what normal is anymore, LOL. The past 2 years I've been growing Rjnveld's Early Sensation, and they've been in bloom at the end of January. I've read reports from other gardeners in the same zone of the same timing. I did see a couple of snowdrops and a Winter Aconite the other day, so at least something is blooming.

Polly, you're so right, we need Steve over here!

Thanks for sharing your photos! No acreage here so limited to a small city lot with citrus trees taking up a lot of the "sun" space. I especially liked Intrigue, Silent Valley and St Patrick.

Hi all!!!

I've been thinking about finding a bulb cubit and here it is. I can't grow tulips well here because of voles but I got a lot of mini daffs last year mostly from Colorblends. Nice guy, he sent me a nice historic iris that takes over his garden (and maybe mine!). I go to the Daffodil and Primrose show every year at Tower Hill in eastern MA. http://www.socialweb.net/Clien...
There is a guy there who sells unusual ones named David Burdock or Burrock. Small amounts though. I'll have to look for his catalog. I don't think he's online. (I'm at the wrong computer to check.)

The Smith College Bulb show is on now. It is always fabulous, intense, and intimate. I have to figure out a weekday to go so the crowds are minimal and I can take photos. http://www.smith.edu/garden/Ho... Wanna visit Patti?

Boojum, Thanks for the information about the Smith Collage Bulb show. I am in Vt until Weds. I will stop in North Hampton on Weds on my way south to see the show. Rendezvous?

I ordered from David Burdick last fall. Here are the new kids that I am expecting this spring from him. Very nice communication with him via email. He said he was swamped with orders last fall. Patti

Love daffs, they are my favorite spring bulb. Last fall, I planted about 200 new ones but they were only the common mixes found at the local Home Depot. Doesn't matter though as by the bloom they bloom in spring, I am so happy to see their cheery faces.

Had these in too much shade for years. Moved them to morning sun last year and they seem to be happier. Lost the tag long ago, but believe the name has "cups" in it.

Harold, those are so cute! They look like the one I've seen called 'Hoop Petticoat'.

Jet Fire, one of my favorites for bright early color. I have them naturalizing in the lawn.

1st outside daffodils, all my outside daffs were originally forced, then planted out...There appear to be two varieties here, a large trumpet and a thiner one with swept back petals. The latter could be Itzim, the former obvallaris.

How do you naturalize daffodils in the lawn? Isn't there a problem when the grass needs to be cut and the daff foilage has not yet died down?

I've only done it in the back yard which is also the dog run, so it can go longer before the first mowing. Even then, finally I couldn't stand it anymore and ended up push mowing that part, and mowed around the Daff foliage. As soon as it starts really yellowing, I go ahead and mow it. I'm glad I only experimented with naturalizing the Daffs there, because it would drive me nuts otherwise, LOL. When I lived in a wooded area, I naturalized some right at the forest's edge, and that worked out very well. Crocus on the other hand, are great naturalized in the lawn- you only have to keep the mower on a higher setting and they're just fine.
