I start over each year.
I used to keep coleus cuttings over winter but it became too much hassle.
Since adding perennials to some of the planters I dont need to buy as many annuals.DD loves to buy flowers for her planters so she gets those at the market each spring.

I have tried to keep coleus over the winter without much success too. I am trying this year only because I have a extra fish tank I am not using for fish. I really want to try to save them because in my area they do not sell many coleus and some years we cannot find them at all. I refuse to order them for 5.00 plus shipping it is to expensive for annuals.

I have not had a problem of bringing in the caladiums and callas in their pots and just putting them in the laundry room all winter. Also, all my tropical plants come into the laundry room. But the coleus have not been good trying to keep them alive all winter.

I remember as a kid my mom kept them as houseplants all year. She never used them outside. They were next to all the normal houseplants of the 50s and 60s. I often wonder why they are so hard to keep in the house these days.

They dont like the fluctuation of winter temps inside
.Many homes get cold at night.Thermostat here keeps night temp at 64 but lack of tropical humidity means I water but not too often.
They like a bright room.Mine are in a south facing window.
This is from the year I couldnt hold back taking cuttings and then taking cuttings in Dec and Feb.I had 300 plants.

I used seed starter trays,I dont recoment it.The cells are too small to support a growing root system for 9 months
Coleus inside still need pinching back, its like the gardening never gets a rest.
This was December 2010 I couldnt stop.

I had to put a table in the jacusie for the annex.By May I was so sick of dealing with them I vowed to stop taking cuttings, now DD cuts a few and raises them in her office upstairs.

I am only going to try to save maybe 4 of them. I will not go as far as you went. Rolling on the floor laughing The fish tank is a old salt water tank I had and it is long so I should be able to put a few in there and put water on the gravel that will give them humidity and I can put the light on so they will get light.

I just do not know why my Mom had a window full of them and there was no problems. I still remember looking at them because the colored leaves fascinated me.

Good morning,

I've been listening to the Coleus conversation (I really like Coleus a lot) and thought I'd send a picture of a local favorite. It takes the Sun well too. Wish I knew the cultivar? Maybe you've grown it? Its hard to tell scale in a picture but the leaves are fairly large; up to 5"s.

The Mums are pretty. Joanne. I did pick up some Asters because they are hardy in my area and I plant them in the garden or keep them over the winter for the following year. I have to take some pics of my Fall Planters.

They have a lot of big pots at Home Depot the last couple of weeks. I was tempted but for 29.00 I just could not make myself do it. Mums are not hardy and I am back to my cheap side of paying too much for annuals. As much as I love coleus I will not mail order those because of cost. So I guess I do not love them that much.

I have picked up that coleus many times David because of the colors is so bright and is a good alternative to a flower. You are right it does very good in sun so I use it in the pots of cannas.
