I grew up in Philly (Pa.) and then lived in Buffalo (N.Y.). I soooo loved the spring bulbs. I remember crocus blooming in the snow Since moving to Fl. in 1978 I have missed the spring blooms that I grew up with. Does anyone know, is there a source that is "aclimated" for lack of a better term, to this area. I have tried daffs, tulips, hyacynth (SP) and others, but no real luck....blooms the FIRST year and then nothing but green leaves. Even the crinums let me down this year. And please don't suggest pulling them and putting them in the fridge to stratify...not gonna happen. TIA

Ginger, I'm in zone 10 and have Daffodils return and bloom every year. Some varieties do better than others though. As far as tulips, crocus, and hyacinth go, they are annuals here.

Any of the clusiana tulips like the straight Species or 'Lady Jane'.

Species humilis violacea or it's variations.

Tulips are notorious for needing more chilling than what they can get down here. I planted a Hyacinth bulb and it did come back the next year, foliage only, then I never saw it again. Daffodils bloom around Christmas here, just north and a little west of where you are. Are you missing them?

You should be able to grow Gladiolus, daffodils, various Lycoris, Crinum, Oxalis crassipes, Allium, Oriental lilies, Amaryllis, Easter lilies, Cucurma, Iris, Cannas, Hedychium, Zephyranthes... Is Liriope a bulb?

P.S. I have an agoraphobic friend who lives between Geneva and Bonifay that I visit once a week. If you'd like some Gladiolus, Oxalis, Lycoris radiata or Cannas, I have plenty and would be happy to share. Just let me know if you'd be able to meet me up on Rt. 2 (at Rt. 79) on a Monday. Division 7 Daffodils, Jonquillas like hot baking summer sun and are often grown in southern gardens. Listed growable in whz 4-9. Many are fragrant
Division 8 Daffodils, Tazettas - good for Southern gardens. Listed whz 5-9. Musky sweet fragrance.

I force the tazetta 'Falconet' yearly and plant it outside afterward w/ excellent results.

Forgot to come back and check up this thread... and still waiting to see what some of the mystery bulbs I've found around the yard and in the lawn ARE. Fun though!

Ginger, Port St. Joe is about 3 hours away driving, we don't always go the same way, just get out the map and start going south and east w/o going through towns if possible or on dirt roads. I looked up Fountain on the map, looks similar-size to Opp, on one of the ways to PSJ. We'd talked about camping this year but went to OH in mid-June and it's been too rainy to consider camping since. When we do get around to it, it would be cool to say hey to you on the way! Prob b waiting until late Sept at this point for it to cool off some.

Hey, Tiffany...if you do deceide to go to PSJ I'd love to meet you. I'm on a "pig trail" here in Fountain....nasty when it rains. When I head to St. George Island I take 20 to 71 or 73 (can't remember which comes first) then the other to PSJ where I pick up 98. It's a nice ride and avoids big towns and dirt roads. Looked at some of your pictures...very nice. Didn't wait for all to load as I'm still stuck on dial-up and things take FOREVER to load.
