This is my tenth season in this house and I have "turned a corner" in my garden planting!

Finally FINALLY, the deer are secured on the OUTside and I have killed all the grass and weeds (covered 'em in newspaper before they could seed this year.

And SO it is time for me to place my plants where I want them to stay!

I'll be buying tulips, daffodils, fritillaria, asiatic lilies, irises, and daylilies (in addition to random things that catch my eye....)

Where to shop?

depends on what you want to spend and whether you want older or newer varieties. I like Homestead Farms which is only about 3 hours from me.
He has very affordable plants, sends large double fans. He has a nice website that is easy to use and has pretty good pictures of all his plants.

Bob Selman at Blue Ridge. He also has extensive selections on the Lily Auction. More than half of the daylilies in my yard came from him.

Bill Maryott at Maryott. EVERYONE who buys from Maryott's is delighted.

Robin Calderon at Earlybird. She is going out of business-drought has just about killed HER, let alone the daylilies. Great prices and always generous with her shipments.

I just received my order from Robin (Earlybird) this past Monday and, as always, she sent absolutely beautiful plants. Although I ordered double fans, she sent 5 to 10 fans of each cultivar plus bonus plants (they are clumps, too)! I believe she still has a sale running, also.

I, too, have been very pleased with Maryott's as well as Charlie Shaw from Shaw's Sunshine Gardens (a true gentleman and a pleasure to do business with). I know I am forgetting someone but I believe you would be pleased with any of these three vendors.

The first place I would start for daylilies is by going to the AHS Display gardens in your local area, and looking to see if there are any sellers listed on the AHS Source List for your area. Go to them when the plants are in bloom and see with your own eyes what does well in your area, with your climate. Ask the display garden owners for recommendations.

Display Gardens http://www.daylilies.org/AHSgardens.html

Source List http://www.daylilies.org/AHSsource.html

Then I would see what AHS club is in your area, and try to go to one of their shows. You can find out there who's showing ( which equals who is growing) in your area, and there are usually flyers for local sellers at shows. Clubs often have sales to the public each year to where you can get good prices on daylilies. Start at this link to find your region, then you can find clubs in your area after clicking on your location. http://www.daylilies.org/AHSreg.html

Have you looked at the "Recommendations" tab here at ATP found at the top of each page? It's a fairly new feature, but still a good resource.

For garden seeds and my favorite Chinese Hand Hoe - I have bought from Pinetree Garden Seeds for years and years. I really like their lettuce mix. https://www.superseeds.com

I don't buy many tools any more - have all I need, but when I did buy things, I found A.M Leonard to be a good quality place. Still the place I go for rolls of tags, marking flags, etc. http://www.amleo.com/default.aspx

For daylilies I have been very happy with certain suppliers on the LA. You can check the LA Sellers thread for those. I have also been shipped awesome plants from Bill Maryott.

I was very very happy with my bulbs from Colorblends. I have only ordered tulips from them but wouldn't hesitate to order daffodils if I were buying some.

Thanks everyone!
And Daylily, thanks for the AHS recommendation. Best I had been able to think of was to email the local Penn State Extension office that has Master Gardeners to ask where, locally, to shop.

I will go look at AHS now, and soon to all the ones you all recommended!

Critter - I forgot to say WHY I start local -- not only will you be able to find the ones that do best in your area -- but they will already be acclimated to growing there. You won't need to wait for them to get over being moved into the north from Florida or California or where ever. Thumbs up

Paul Owens (NC) used to live in PA, and grows hardy daylilies. His nursery is called "A Slightly Different Nursery" I think. My daylilies from Robin C. were also very generous, PLUS generous gift plants, and I wasn't expecting gift plants since it was a sale.

Also, Dan Hansen still has Ned Roberts CLUMPS on sale: http://ladybugdaylilies.com/ned%20roberts%20sale.htm and he has other clumps in his bargain basement. I ordered a bunch from him this spring, and received no less than 4 fans of each, as well as bonus plants even though his website clearly stated no bonuses on bargain clumps.

For other types of plants, Bluestone Perennials should be having their annual half-price sale right about now, and I've always been happy with High Country Gardens.

Thanks - I knew that!
Sadly I didn't have much luck though.
The local society's page is out of date, 4 growers are listed, MOSTLY WITHOUT PICTURES and all hybridizers with $100 specimens..... There was one still selling older introductions that were affordable - that one is 5 1/2 hours away............

grrrrr

Paul Owen told us that when he lived in PA, the nearest Daylily Society he could find was in Philly, a 4-hour drive from him.

Or at least there was in 2012.
From the looks of their website, they may have fallen apart.....

Fiwit, there are some wonderful AHS Display Gardens in the Pittsburgh area. Why not contact them and ask if they sell or if they can recommend local sellers? The Pittsburgh club should be able to recommend local daylily sellers, too. Many of their club members sell daylilies.

Yeah, the Pittsburgh Iris and Daylily Society web page hasn't changed since 2012.
They list 4 growers, all hybridizers, all but one WAY out of my price range (one still sells older introductions).
But that one is 5 1/2 hours away in Virginia.

I keep a link to Charlotte's web page up on the right side of the Daylily Forum home page. You might check there for PA sellers. Nearly everyone I kniw who breeds or sells daylilies or has a website about them is listed there.
http://daylilydiary.com/

I did go to the AHS site, and now feel spoiled to live in Central Ohio. I have a lot of great gardens within a couple hours drive. I had no idea there were so few listed for your region.
