Not sure what's up with this plant, but I've noticed that some of them have the most unusual leaves. There is a center section of each leaf that is raised...almost like a small leaf ingrown on the large leaf. Most of the chicks are normal, but I did get one chick with the unusual leaves. Any ideas about this?

Lots of pictures......

Chris,

Sometimes they come as stripes too. I had a 'Silverine' seedling years ago that was probably the most consistent at doing this sort of thing. I even named it 'Stars and Stripes' but decided not to introduce it as it didn't do it on every rosette, sort of like 'Fame Monstrose' being more just 'Fame' a lot of the time. Helen wanted her plants to be consistent so this didn't fly with her either although she found the mutation interesting.

My clump of 'Bedazzled' has several that are identical with the bumps on your leaf although I have never noted that cultivar doing it before. probably a bit of genetic potential + the right environmental triggers.

Hope that helps!

Kevin

Chris,

I believe that I have seen that before as well, but cannot recall the details or where. It was probably just temporary on one of my plants. I would "mark" the plant and keep track of them down the line to see if you could select for the trait or perhaps use as breeding material.

Another of the semp unusual s.

Kevin, by an chance do you know if Fame Monstrose rosettes bloom?

Kevin, thanks for the information. It certainly is interesting and with our bizarre weather this year, I might even find more strange things. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that sort of thing. I sure agree with your comment about 'Fame Monstrose' being more just 'Fame' too. Smiling

Twit, I will mark and watch it just for curiosity!

Chris, I think the bump on the leaves is the "delight" part of the Pink Delight... Whistling Sure gives the plant more texture.

Oh Chris, what a wonderful treat to find out in your semp beds. Great photos. Will be interesting to see if you can select out offsets that will retain this unusual feature. I agree with Kevin and twit, about using any blooming plants for breeding purposed, just to see if you can isolate the trait.

Kevin, sure would have loved seeing the Stars and Stripes.

Now that I am back home, I will have to go through my beds to see if there is anything unusual going on. Smiling

haha - probably not!!
I noticed an exciting thing on many of my semps, they have watermarks and I think its due to the hot sun, then rain, then hot sun again...my beds are full south facing, and up near a brick wall, so they are hot when its sunny! At any rate, many of my semps have this feature, which personally I love!!! Hurray!
I tip my hat to you.

I just came in from the back yard. When we got home this afternoon I checked for any oddities. Not a one. But I did get all the beds weeded and moved a bunch of seedlings out of the beds. Hurray!

I did find beautiful water marks on the semps that would usually have them. Non on the other ones.

You got ALL your beds weeded? Wow, I'm impressed! Hurray! Hurray! I'm still trying to get my initial spring clean up/weeding done in all my gardens. Seems to be taking me forever this year.

I've got lots of watermarks this year too. Must be a good year for them.

Glad you're home safe and sound Lynn.

I still have my two perennial beds to do, and one bed in the front yard. They are chock full of very tall weeds. Sad

Chris, I was out doing photos of the semps yesterday. I came across the same thing in just one of my 'Rita Jane' rosettes.

I will watch to see if any others do this.
