I've always been terrible about maintaining my food garden, so incorporating food plants into my ornamental garden has been a great way to contend with that habit- if its not pretty, I just don't want to work in it! I've found many food plants to be surprisingly beautiful and just as at home in the ornamental garden as any flower.

What food plants grow in your Cottage Garden?

I grow tomatoes each year, peas and beans most years and also some cucumbers and sometimes peppers. I really used to grow lots more vegeatables and then blanch and freeze them but I don't do it anymore as there are no longer more people home to eat everything.

I do have lots of small fruit shrubs. Blackberries, extra dwarf cherry trees, currants, gooseberries, serviceberries and blueberries all grow here in my cottage garden. Often the shrubs are surrounded by flowering plants.

We have had thornless blackberries for several years. They have done very well. I freeze a lot of the berries spread out on a cookie sheet, then pop them into ziptop bags when they are solid. These are great (in the frozen state) for making smoothies. Here's a picture of frost on the bushes. Five of the 6 blueberry bushes we planted are continuing to do well.
The three old cherry trees in the front yard got too wild to get any fruit below "bird level" and I am getting a bit too old and shaky for stepladders. I saved several volunteers from pits and we transplanted 10 of them to the side garden, where they are now bearing fruit. Almost lost them with the locusts a couple of years ago--didn't realize what was scarring the tender branches until damage was done, but they are all OK. I just hope to get the fruit before the birds do.
I started thornless red raspberry bushes a couple of years ago, but really need a new more plants since they are my favorite fruit. I started two elderberries the same year, but between a lawn mower (despite the flag at the plant) and a horse that got loose, one of them is barely surviving. There seem to be enough wild ones around to pollinate the other one though.
The Arbor Day Foundation has a hazelnut research program we have participated in for several years; they have produced nuts the past couple of seasons. We also have pecan trees and chestnuts that are nearing their end stages, but I have raised some chestnut saplings from seeds that took root. Need to transplant some of them.

I actually love the berries on blackberries. And mine are the errect thornless kind also. Such a joy not to have thorns on those blackberry plants! But you guys might think I am weird but I love when the blackberries bloom. I think those white flowers are so pretty :-))

I have blackberries ,gooseberries, mulberries , red and black raspberries and of course strawberries all in the garden here and there.

I think the raspberries are my favorite too, or at least they seem to never make it into the house.

I find both raspberries and blueberries to be lovely plants, so at home among ornamentals. I had raspberries at my last home, need to get some going here. My dog loves raspberries, and only the ripe ones. Its so funny to see her selecting the one ripe berry from a cluster! She always got all the fruit on the lower part of the plants, LOL.

lol, Neal, we had a dog that would go through and pick the largest ripe blueberries, her tongue would be absolutely blue.

I have strawberries in the garden, and the kitchen garden is herbs and lettuce and usually a potted tomato plant - the rest of the tomatoes are in my veg garden - a rose bush, volunteer violas and Deptford pinks. I have alpine strawberries in the fairie yard, as they are easier for the fairies to harvest.

I use my my cottage garden to hide some things I might not normally grow. We have a very fussy homeowners assocation (I actually know someone who had a complaint filed against them because their tomatoes were messy and unsightly!!!).. I grew potatoes in my cottage beds (used some double-ring plant supports and plastic mesh to fashion cages), then grew flowers up in front of them. Used the same theory as growing potatoes in containers, and used mulched leaves, etc to mound them up. My cottage garden gets full southern sun, it's one of the best growing spots on our small suburban lot. If anyone noticed, no one said anything. I also tried artichokes there, but didn't have much success with them. Veggies can be very pretty, and I think they (along with herbs) fit in well with the cottage garden. Wish I had room for some rasberries or blackberries.
