Hi everyone! I've been offline for a bit -- pollinating and trying to get us ready for our vacation. But we're finally here now and I have time to relax, and I just grabbed my little IPad mini and taught myself how to upload a picture, so we'll see if I did it right, I've finally had a few seedlings bloom, and this is the first one I really like. Please don't laugh too hard because I really do like it...

It's from my very first batch of seedlings ever, and it's tall, has lots of substance, and the color is sort of a velvety rusty red with a greenish throat and purple eye ring. I've only seen two blooms so far, but I'm very pleased for a very first keeper seedling. I do realize that by next year I'll probably wonder what I ever saw in it, but right now I'm very happy that I responded positively to one of my first seedlings! I think I'll plant it in the garden with my spiders and UF's and see how it does..

The cross is WAY COOL x ALIEN FORCE, and I like to give seedlings nicknames -- so this one is now named "WAY COOL ALIEN" ! And I think it's much prettier than this picture shows -- I'm such a proud mama! Oh yes, and I even noticed a couple of teeth here and there...

I do have a question about how to number seedlings. I'd like to include a year, but would it be the year I did the pollination and planted the seeds (2011), the year it germinated and emerged as a seedling (2012), or the year it first bloomed (2013)?

And now that I've successfully accomplished getting that post done, I want to say how beautiful I think everyone else's seedlings are. It seems like nothing really developed my true appreciation for each and every one of these beauties until I started seeing my own seedlings bloom and saw how really sad they were in comparison! Even the one I like doesn't hold a candle to any of these! Fred, I've been making all kind of crosses with your Lillian's Stuff and Such, and it looks like most of them are taking. I'm trying to cross large ones with smalls and minis, and I'm hopeful I 'll get something nice at some point. Those dip seedlings are to die for, and oh how I wish you and Michele were into trying some tet conversions!

I find that seedlings are our babies, they belong to us to do whatever we want with them. I still have a lot from 2008, they are pretty to ME, so I keep them. Betty, Congrats on your beautiful seedling. I hope you get many more to keep and love.

Betty, very nice!!!!

The way I number seedlings is for ex. one cross (however many seeds are in that cross) are numbered 1101, 1102, etc. that's 11 for the year 2011 when the seeds were planted. The new ones this year are 1201, 1202, etc. Fred does it the same way (I copied him). Now where we vary is once he pulls a seedling and it goes to the hybridizing area he labels them HB42, HB33, etc. I label mine SB 11-01, SB 11-02, etc because mine are in a seedling bed (SB) and then I just number them 1,2,3,4 and so on and I start it with the year on it so I know when it was started from seed.
So the ones I move this year will be SB 12-01, SB 12-02, etc because they were started in 2012.

Hope that makes sense. Now in your case it may be different since your seeds did not germinate until 2012 even though you planted them in 2011. However, if it were mine, since I label the crosses when the seeds get planted then mine would have the year 2011 even if they germinated in 2012.

My Seedling Redefined Designed X Blue Eyed Bandit #2 had its ffo today. I was glad to see several improvements over last year: larger bloom with better color on taller scapes with better bud count and some side branching. I'm happy my seedling bed is starting to have blooms!

Very interesting! I received NEW PARADIGM as a bonus plant last year. I don't really care for it but I may have to reconsider that.

I can tell you Betty if my first batch of seedling had something like that I would have been a proud papa. Its just the beginning, I know you have some great daylilies to work with.

Very nice seedling Debra, its always surprising how much a seedling can improve the second year, the third year it may be even better.

Nice seedlings Michele, love daylilies where the sepals are tucked in, makes the eye and pattern look bigger and really stand out.

These are two and three year olds in the hybridizing
area that are starting to rebloom. Its time to make a
decision on what will stay and what will leave. I will
be making notes on the average bloom size, scape height,
branching, and bud count for possible registration.

Wonderful seedlings, Fred! That first one has great parentage, I really love HB4, and I can see why you'd want to register the Zahadoom seedling -- and that last spider is to die for. In one of your earlier pictures I noticed your hang tags with paper clips. I've been using paper hang tags, but just before we left I noticed a couple of them were getting chewed on, and I really dread what I'll find when we return. So now I'm going to start exploring other tags that I can write on. Can you tell me where you get those hang tags? and do you write on them with a #2 pencil?

And Michele, thank you sooooooo much for that valuable info about assigning seedling numbers. I know I can always count on you, Fred and Lyle to give me incredible information, directions, etc., and that is worth so much to me. You guys are incredible.

THANK YOU!

I love all the eyed and edged bagels, and the two spidery ones are very nice too. I like the motion of the first Rolling Raven seedling, and the dark color of the second.

Ooh, Michele, I really like that New Paradigm x Dragonfly Dawn seedling. Love the way those colors in the eye look against the yellow tones.

Betty, I will answer that one too Whistling I copied this from Fred also. We use these when there is a pollen we may use occassionally and don't give it a color. Other than that we use colored paper clips that has an assigned pollen which is written down, makes it faster to tag using paper clips than to write the pollen parent over and over for a pollen we use a lot.

Now for those who want to write other info such as date pollinated and whatever else the tags you write on would be better.

The ones we use are nothing more than cut up mini blinds with a hole punched in them and a paper clip used to secure it on the plant. Here's Fred's photo
Thumb of 2013-06-07/tink3472/1d614b

I use the plastic coated paper clips so thye won't rust but any will do. Make sure the hole is close enough to the end or when you try to put the paper clip on it will rip it. And yes, we use a #2 pencil to write on them; it doesn't fade or wear off. If the cross doesn't take you can just put a line through the pollen name and write another below it. You can continue to do this until the front and back are filled up or you can erase it if you wish.

You can also use the ones that look like the plastic bread tags; Earthstar has a couple of different ones.
