Wow, those are some very large leeks. And it is making me hungry looking at them.

Dear Lynn, they are not big leeks! Leeks are one of the only vegetables you can grow to massive size and still taste good. They grow them to massive sizes for village Horticultural shows to win prizes. It is an obsession in some parts of the UK. Highly prized leeks and highly guarded at all times.
My Grandfather had an allotment and grew pot leeks, which means only one leek in a massive pot! He grew them to win shows and used to sleep in his shed on the allotment with his dog to guard them!
Each person has a special recipe for the soil/compost they grow them in and the presentation at shows must be perfect!
Of course to the Welsh it is one of their emblems and rightly so!
if my grandfather won a show in the lots of Horticultural society's there are everywhere, my Grandmother would make steak and leek pudding, now I am getting hungry!
They do it with most vegetables over here, and especially shallots. They have to be the perfect size to fit through a governed size show ring, if not they cannot be entered for the show!

For those who don't know, this is the name of a Welsh town!
Nobody can pronounce it, well somebody in Wales might be able to.

One of our grandsons has a Gaelic name, maithghamhain, which in modern times is shortened to Mathuin.

We cross posted! It's Welsh I only speak a little. Hangs head in shame, my native language and all that. But my Dad is fluent. My favourite Welsh world is archfarchnad. Said in a harsh tone it sounds like your cursing someone, but it actually means supermarket lol

It's very rarely used in full, usually it's shortened to LlanfairPG There's a story about how it got it's name, it is something to do with trying to out do somewhere else to get the longest name, but I forget the details.

Dear Kate, it is easy the story behind the name.
The long name cannot be considered an authentic Welsh-language toponym. It was artificially contrived in the 1860s to bestow upon the station the honour of having the longest name of any railway station in Britain, an early example of a publicity stunt. The village's web site credits the name to a cobbler from the local village of Menai Bridge. According to Sir John Morris-Jones the name was created by a local tailor, whose name he did not confide, letting the secret die with him. The current postmark shows the name Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, but there are contemporary examples of the full name seen below.
However: he Carmarthenshire village of Llanfynydd unofficially adopted the name Llanhyfryddawelllehynafolybarcudprindanfygythiadtrienusyrhafnauole in 2004 in protest at plans to erect a wind farm nearby (the name means "a quiet beautiful village; a historic place with rare kite under threat from wretched blades" in English).
There is another answer to the name and that is because Wales lost at Rugby, the Rugby supporters drowned their sorrows in the pub, they could not spell way out in English, or indeed much else, so named it that!
