I usually start out with a vague idea of bed structure for specific plants like daylilies, but after that it usually comes down to, "Hmm, I have a space there, let's see if it grows." And I have been privileged to be the beneficiary of mamajack's generosity, so I have had many more options than might otherwise have been the case. After shuffling plants around, and losing more than a few to neglect or ignorance, things are shaping up pretty well this year. It's fun to watch.

You expressed my style well! Some of my best combinations have been serendipitous.

My planting has no rhyme or reason to it. I just stick plants where I have a spot. Everyone tells me that I have a real eye for detail, which cracks me up! I have no eye for detail. I just plant what I like, and it all fits together in the end.

I gave a neighbor a bunch of extra plants I had after dividing some. He said I needed to show him where to plant them, since I knew what I was doing. I grabbed a plant, closed my eyes, and tossed it into his flower beds. He thought I was kidding, but that is how I did it at home! It turns out that it worked for him, too! His yard looked amazing, using my scientific method!
