It has come to the attention of both Chris and me that we have an error in the database for Sempervivum 'Mount Usher'.
The discovery came about when one of our members (sandnsea2) posted a new photo of a very lovely semp that did not match what was already in the database. While researching to find which one was correct I found that sandnsea2 had the correctly identified 'Mount Usher'.

Thank you so much Janice for entering such lovely photos of this semp, and helping in clearing up an error in the database.

This is such a great time to discuss how we can clear up errors, especially when we have all be trading back and forth. This can happen to any of us. So when we find something we are unsure of lets work together to track down the correct information.

Anyone receiving S. 'Mount Usher' from me or Chris, please mark it as a NOID.
We do know the source of this semp. We are contacting the nursery and asking them to remove it from their list of plants.
The below photos are not S. 'Mount Usher'

As you can see, it is quite different.

Chris, maybe you can put a few of your photos in this thread?

This is what Mount Usher should look like:

We are now open for discussion. Smiling

Sadly, this is probably more common than we realize.

Thanks Lynn for creating this thread. I've added some of my pictures to the first post.

Twit, I agree, I'm sure it does happen quite often. Let's hope the source they came from will cooperate and remove from their inventory so the problem doesn't get compounded.

I'm not too sure we have the right pic of Mount Usher, yet, I've been digging around the net since i got my plant. on a German site are 3 pics 1 from SMG looks like Janice's pic,not 100% sure but these 2 looks to have Watermarks on the leaves and the other 2 pic on the site appear to be clear and are a more rose Red (here is a link http://www.semperhorst.de/dieh... MB - MZ/diehmor MB - MZ.htm Another site has a clear 1 but much darker burgundy . But all that said it all depends on the type of dirt and the amount of sunlight. the plant gets.
Here is an example of Ashes of Roses i took these pic today after i got Chris's email
pic #1 is in the front near a fence and gets about 2 hrs of full sun between 11 am to 1pm bright light but no more sun than that and is planted in fairly hard dirt in the ground
pic 2 is in front but on opposite side of yard-gets about 4 hrs of full sun between 10 am & after 3 it is shaded by tree from the sun2pm
pic 3 is in back of house and gets about 2 hrs of full evening sun around 4:30 to 6:30
Pic 4 is in front and gets about 2 hrs. of full overhead sun from about 3 to 5 pm the last 3 are all in potting soil in planters

Hi Cliff, great photos of S. 'Ashes of Roses'.
Yes, they can look quite different depending on the time of year, soil, sun/shade, water/or lack of. But your photos still show a basic type of semp represented in all your photos, that is consistent with the type of semp Ashes of Roses is. An awesome semp for sure. Smiling

The problem with the photos in the first post of this thread is that they are not even a tectorum type sempervivum (the ones both Chris and I posted). But the one that sandnsea2 posted is the correct type. And yes, it will change color depending on season and conditions. Also water markings are usually seasonal. So at certain times of the year they may show no water markings. And they can look different from a young offset to a mature rosette.
Do you have Mount Usher? It is a beautiful semp. Lovey dubby

Those are some good links too Lynn. They are all tectorums and especially the sites that show many photos of it (your last link) seem to support that Janice has the correct plant.

Those are some nice pictures of' Ashes of Roses' Cliff. Just goes to show how much of an effect the environment can have on the looks of any given semp!

Cliff has a 'Mount Usher' that he received from me, which is obviously the wrong plant. That's why he was already researching it on his own.
