Any one know what this is on the daylily scape and what caused it?

It's hard to tell because they are so small, but I think I see some little white specks on the stem and the bud, even on the leaf on the left - they could be aphids or thrips. Do you have a magnifying glass that you might look through and see if you see any little creatures in there?

Aphids

Thrip - although I think this is really high magnification.

Also might see if you notice any tarnished plant bugs on your scapes or flowers

Yep, I agree. The little white flecks on your picture appear to be aphids and the aphids are feasting on your scape.

Yep, aphids for sure. The white flecks are the molted skin generally and the bigger aphids are lurking somewhere. Try looking in between the fans and around those buds, they are somewhere.

There are aphids everywhere, have had them the last three years. But this is the first scape in such a peculiar configuration I have seen in all that time. Thought it was some alien mutation or something. Hilarious! Lots of ladybugs are hanging out, so I will cut off this scape and let them take care of business on the rest.

They are APHIDS, they almost ate everything up this year around here. I sprayed several times to get rid of them. I finally used Bayer 3 in One on them. That was also good for thrips, but I need to spray again for the thrips, they are making my flowers ugly.

Guess I should count myself lucky, then, that they only destroyed this one scape. Smiling
