Have only recently discovered mini hostas. Loved seeing everyone's photos from last spring. Any new photos out there?

Looking at this thread made me realize that I've totally ignored my mini bed this year! I've got some MIA and some of my Mouse Ears are reverting Grumbling

Mine need to be divided.....desperately! They are all running together, plus there are a few baby hostas I was nursing. LOL. I will post after I sort this mess out. LOL.

I'm going to move them out of that bed and fill it with bigger ones. It's too steep for the smaller ones that don't establish big roots. My Nougat was actually out of the ground because of the heavy rains running down the hill and washing the soil away. I'm glad I went out to get pics today for this thread, or I may not have found it in time.

Hey all,
I'm just a N00b to hostas compared to you guys, but I'm posting this picture of 3 hostas because I really like this combo. I like that there are 3 different sized hostas so you can get a good idea of how big they each are in 'real life' in comparison to each other. I know these plants need to be moved around as they are getting crowded.

In the back, the big one is 'Guacamole'. On the right in front is 'Limey Lisa' with her pretty little blooms, and the front on the left is 'Kabitan'. Only 'Limey Lisa' is a true mini, right? Honestly I don't know enough about the classifications, I'll have to read up.

I don't have 'Kabitan' - might have to get myself one. 'Limey Lisa' is classified as a mini, but she will form a fast growing and very dense, flat mound. Good ground cover plant. Blooms prolifically too. Love the 'Guacamole', but don't have space for one myself.

I'm a daylily person but at our recent National convention, there was a great hosta vendor and he was selling regular size as well as mini hostas. Five of the minis followed me home and I put them into a container. The vendor had done that with some of the minis and I liked the effect. One that I bought from him he had hybridized and he said it was going to be named hosta of the year. it looked unusual and is in the back of this container garden. Sorry I can't remember his name, but think he is a "big poobah" in the world of hostas! I think his hosta was named 'Curly Fries.' Are you familiar with that one?

Curley Fries is hosta of the year 2016, and I sell it and many other miniature hostas.
Next year I will have even more that I recently purchased.

If you are interested in what I have for sale, sent me a tree-mail.

Mine isn't as full as Paul's, but it does have a pretty long "reach" for a mini...I would say it fits more into the "small" category.

Hi, floota
I consider myself a daylily person too but I grow several hosta. My late sister had a great collection. We toured several hosta and dl gardens together. Is it just me or is the minis harder to keep alive. I lost 4 or 5 large hosta that were just put in last fall before our last horrible winter!
I have Baby Bunting and Blue Mouse Ears doing well. I think Pandora's Box didn't make it. Ginko Craig didn't return either. plus a mini Lakeside.

Paul is correct that Curly Fries is not a miniature since it reaches 10 inches tall. That makes it a small hosta.

Hostas up to 4" tall are dwarf, and those up to 6" tall are miniature. This standard is rather stringent and I do not agree with it. I would rather cut off at 8" since some do not reach their recorded height while others might exceed.

Since most of us do not measure our plants, some hostas taller than 6" are often called miniature.

I am successful with a large number of Hostas of all sizes, I have planted Pandora's Box several times and always lost it after a few years. Another I can not grow is Sea Thunder.

I am not one to baby my plants. I give them compost and water and if you don't make it I rarely rebuy.

Hosta Hope is another that died and I bought another, and it died. It is now named Hopeless to me.

Great Expectations always died for me and I do not have any desire to try again.

While Frosted Mouse Ears and Holy Mouse Ears performed poorly, Royal Mouse Ears has grown very well and multiplied.

I lost Hope and Cherished also. I've had success with Great Expectations and I love it. I have two GE's that are about 4 feet wide.

That is a beauty. I lost Tatoo, I really wanted that one but saw that other had problems with it too so I didn't repurchase it.
