Boxelder… I hate those bugs. They always attack the sides of buildings with sun and literally cover the whole side of the building . As bad as shield bugs.

Yup, Boxelder beetle. They'll swarm for a while and then disappear.

You are a saint, I had never seen these before. I visited a place where I had seen these, next thing I knew they were around my house I swear they hitchhiked on my car. They propagate like Roaches (I have never had roaches YET), thought for sure i had these killed off. Thank You! PS: they also dont seem to want to be inside the house thank goodness.

I spray the side of the out buildings , barn and house with soap and water adding a cup of ammonia to a 6 gal hand sprayer. They leave quickly n' don't get inside areas to over winter. They try to get inside any small cracks or windows.

Just be thankful it's not a Western Conifer Seed Bug! At this time of year, thousands (no joke) of both Boxelder Beetles and Western Conifer Seed Bugs swarm against our house, looking for warmth before winter. You can't walk outside without them flying into your face every five seconds or so. Very annoying!

Reminds of the lab I worked in... box elder beetles for some reason liked the perchloric acid hoods where we prepared samples. Perchloric acid = very strong oxidizer and beetles = strongly oxidizable. The beetles would gather in the back trough of the hood and eventually turn into little black piles of beetle charcoal. I had to be careful cleaning them up, being sure I wet them down good so they didn't blow up! Hilarious!

It was only the box elder beetles that had this suicidal habit, never saw anything else.

That's really, strange, Connie. Wonder why they would do that. Confused

Oh, and I forgot to add that the Seed Bugs spray you with a horrible-smelling liquid. So don't touch them!

When I was getting gas yesterday there was one of these bugs crawling all over the pump for some reason. I was just careful not to tick it off and worked around it. But I kept wondering why it was attracted to the gas pump.

The problem I have is stink bugs. Seems like I have one in my home at all times. my cat foes after them. Just last week, I had the terrible stink bug smell coming out of the garbage disposal sink - maybe the cat knocked one in there?? Confused Good think I had some disposal cleaner.

Yes I agree stink bugs are the worst. As they fly thru a room they make a creepy noise and scares my dogs. Or reading my IPad at night one pops up in my face…attracted to the light …they really smell horrible can clear a room faster than my dogs…and leave black spots everywhere. This Oct. I washed all the windows and screens window tracks due to the stink bugs trying to get inside. This really helped keep them away. Haven't had one inside yet. Knock on wood…
They are a huge crop buster and threaten a main crop export - beer hops. We have suffered the effects of airplane spraying …nearby farms. Not happy with the overspray effects. No birds, bees, butterflies and nothing flying at all. Except a drone occasionally. It's like being in the twilight zone. 👻

Wow - is there anyone official you can complain to about the over-spray? EPA??

cwhitt Tons of complaints about this issue have been filed over the years. Always excuses for the order by the state . Statement usually is the helicopter company did what the order states… not responsible for any damage by the overspray. So many have complained about this and it's always a process 'under investigation'….buried… is the usual update.

It's actually far worse for many have lost pets days after spraying and it's been going on far longer than we ever expected and still goes on even when certain known harmful pesticides have been banned… I can smell it every time they spray.

It seems to me that loosing beloved pets, bees, birds , butterflies and yes even bugs (good bugs) is not a concern. The state is using the loss of the states gross farm exports are far more important to the state's economy than anything else and noxious weed control in our forrest's.

This is never reported on news channels nor warnings from the state of scheduled overhead spray dates or warnings for those living in agriculture zoned areas.

@bumplbea If I were you, I would personally make a report to the EPA. And then I would call the news stations and ask to be interviewed. My son is an attorney, and just recently did similar when they put in a high crime Greyhound/Barrons bus station in his neighborhood. He was not sure anything would happen, but now it has turned into a huge deal with all the news agencies reporting on it and the entire matter now going to court. At first the city claimed they had nothing to do with anything, but my son kept at it - researching permits, calling the news stations, getting neighbors on board. And the city suddenly took note. If pets are dying, then also report it to animal cruelty - every possible concerned agency you can think of. Be the squeaky wheel and get the public involved and the city will suddenly pay attention. If it is killing pets, then people are also being endangered, and the land also.

I haven't dealt with them much not in very large numbers, but they do creep me out whenever they scurry away after lifting a rock or log.
They're as **rny as lily beetles, but don't damage plants to my knowledge....

Arico In my gardening years of dealing with creepy crawly & flying bugs, spiders, snakes, mice, voles, gophers, bats, coyotes, bob cats , messy birds and yes even a stray bull every once in awhile. Very little surprises me any more. I think I have become immune to most of it , except those pesky aggressive yellow jackets.
I have just adapted to various ways to eliminate, cope and treat areas that are seriously affected. Some bugs are far more harmful to our trees and plants than others and can cause irreparable damage to gardens and forests. Not to mention those pesky well intentioned humans who have caused considerable damage to my garden … not intentionally but doing their jobs hired by the powers that be that know exactly what they are doing …

cwhitt thank you and I appreciate your concern and advice. I am already in another dispute with the county it is a lot of frustration, aggravation and work… I can sympathize with your son. Send him my blessings and I hope there is a positive solution soon.
It's far more important to have peace ✌️.

We get inundated with these little Firebugs but nowhere near as bad as shield bugs that somehow or another get into sealed rooms and then buzz around you at night when sat in bed reading. Some years the front of our south facing house is covered in ladybirds which also get into the house and cluster in the corner of rooms. They can stink as well but the Firebugs I tend to leave as I do not have the time to eradicate them all. They seem to love clustering on the Hisbiscus seedheads.

Have you and your neighbors tried posting on X (formerly Twitter)? It is a great source of actual news the legacy media won't report, and has great reach. The squeaking wheel gets the oil, but only if enough people hear it. Give it a try!
