Completed a trade (Saturday) and am thrilled at having Christmas in June. I sent 1/2 of some of my rarities (the slow-growing and the tiny) and received 16 things I did not have. Took me all day to make up the laser-printed and laminated labels and to get the plants in the ground. Primarily because I had to shift some of the things that had multiplied so well that they were bursting the seams of my bed dividers. But also because I had to have umpteen browser windows open cross-referencing photos and descriptions to be sure I got it right.

It seems to me that single chicks take plus-or-minus 3 seasons to really get going and make it necessary to shift them into larger sections. Especially noticeable with some of the larger forms - S. 'Red Lion' has become gigantic and has been moved to a 2' x 4' area all to itself. It'll be 2 seasons before that section of bed is filled, but wow, will it be spectacular!

On another note, one of my most beautiful noID's has been identified (by the person I traded with). It's Jovibarba 'Preissiana' - lovely applegreen color and a gazillion rollers from each 3" rosette. The white stuff in the photo is spent flowers from a seriously over-performing black locust tree. Thumb of 2013-06-16/LabourofLove/752356

Hurray! Hurray! I know how you feel. I received a big box of Christmas in June this week also. I made labels after cooking for Father's day.

I will be planting tomorrow. It rained all day today and we are suppose to get a little rain tomorrow so this should be good for them.

More searching tells me that my newly-ID'd Jovi is J. globifera subsp. hirta var preissiana ex Poludnica. I don't know what that mouthful means - confusing because there are synonyms. Oh well, just gonna roll with it until I learn something different.

Kate and Cinta, happy planting. We all are waiting to see photos of your new babies.
Kate, your Red Lion is going to need that every bit of that 2' x 8' bed. Thumbs up

Cinta, your new semp babies will love that rain. Natures vitamins. As long as they aren't overdosed on it. Thumbs up

And my best authority says it would be J. globifera ssp. hirta. I've labeled it as such and put 'Preissiana' in parenthesis more as a reminder to me than for any other reason.

The names are a trick when I'm selling them and there's only so many words that will print on a label. I had to decide between labeling the rollers as Sempervivum or Jovibarba. I'm moving to Semp. as it's easier to have them all in one group. I like the looks of your pressiana Kate. I have one labeled pressiana Belair Tatra. I doesn't look similar to yours though.

I'm excited about your trade Kate. Hurray! And what a lovely roller you have in that first post.
Here is some information on the correct name of it.
J. hirtum ssp. adenophorum, syn is J. preissiana. Here is a link to the entry in the database. And look, we have no photo of it yet. Whistling

Mark you can put J. hirta 'Hedge Hog', S. 'Pink Pearl' or h. 'Torrid Zone', if you want to shorten a name for tags. And that would give your customers a correct name of their succulents. Hurray!
Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Except you will have to put your plant names on the tags, not mine. Rolling on the floor laughing

All rollers are Jovibarba, not sempervivum.

This is where we can get into so much trouble with incorrectly named plants. If we aren't quite sure as to the correct name for a plant, it needs to become just a
Jovibarba, sempervivum or heuffelii, which ever applies.
I had to add a couple semps to the NOID area today. The Blue Jay has been busy. Thumbs down

Lynn you have BJ problem I have Robin problems. They always take my Sedum and put it in their nest. Every year she builds her nest under my garage overhang and I look up and there is the red sedum. She only takes red sedum. I do not know what that is about. I guess she is decorating her bedroom and she likes a little red.

Cinta that is so cute. I wouldn't mind sharing a little red sedum with my Robin. So far I haven't seen any sign of the Robins bothering anything here.
Would be great if you could get a photo of her nest. Sounds to me like she is practicing 'Green Building'.

robins... Grumbling Sorry, have nothing good to say about living robins here except possibly omelets made from blue eggs. They do major damage to my small fruits garden every year. I am good friends with the neighborhood alley cat for just that reason. Will enjoy the pics when they come.
