Sorry but the photo is blurry and small. Could you try again? This time, clear photos of the entire tree, a closeup of the needles on branches, any cones...

And where is Lancs?

Welcome to the forum, dionturner! We have some great tree identifiers here, but they always ask for the photos Lucy suggests. The more the better.

This is the tree, hope this is better, had to cut it it was too tall, people are saying you have killed it, it won't grow back, I need to know what it is and will it grow back? Thanks

Hi & welcome! Did you cut off the top of the tree, or just some of the branches? Is the first pic a "before" pic?

Hi,
The tree was 30ft high so we cut 15ft off, so yes the top and branches.
Thanks

You haven't killed it, if it still has 15' of trunk and foliage, but I can't predict how it will grow back.

I don't think it is likely to grow back in a normal shape. Sometimes when a tree like that loses its top it replaces that point with more than one, i.e. two leaders instead of one. If it does grow back it may be a strange shape - but if it did grow back normally it would just be doing the same thing again. If it will ultimately be much too big for the space it might be better to just take it out and replace with something that fits better.

Thank you! We all need to realize the rest of the world doesn't necessarily understand the shorthand. For instance, if I said I was from Ontario, CA is that a place in Canada or a place in California? Confused I'm constantly confused by place names.

I was thinking that too. A tree or shrub that has to be constantly mangled to prevent it from getting too big for the spot is frustrating and will spend a lot of time looking strange.

If considering a replacement, look up pics of them in various locations so you get an idea of how big it can get. It looks like width might have been the biggest issue with that particular tree in that spot. If so, something with "pencil" in the nickname would probably work better because that indicates a plant that might get very tall, but will retain a very thin width.

If both height and width were troublesome, look for a "dwarf" version.

Best luck!

Welcome! to garden.org!

From the close up photo, it reminds me of possibly Chamaecyparis or Cupressus species but those are wild guesses on my part because I don't know if either grows in your area.

Looks a little juniper-y to me. Maybe a variety of Juniperus chinensis.

I agree that it looks to be in the juniper clan.
