I was thinking that too. A tree or shrub that has to be constantly mangled to prevent it from getting too big for the spot is frustrating and will spend a lot of time looking strange.
If considering a replacement, look up pics of them in various locations so you get an idea of how big it can get. It looks like width might have been the biggest issue with that particular tree in that spot. If so, something with "pencil" in the nickname would probably work better because that indicates a plant that might get very tall, but will retain a very thin width.
If both height and width were troublesome, look for a "dwarf" version.
