Has anyone grown tulips from seed? I tried it two years in a row now, last year nothing, this year quite a few sprouted. I planted tulipa sprengeri and was pleased with this years germination but now all the seedlings are dying off. I have been watering the pots so they weren't completely dry and now they have all died off. I wasn't really expecting them to go dormant already and I hope that's all that has happened to them. Anybody have experience with seedling tulips? Do they always go dormant like this?

Well, I tried quite succesfully the Tulipa tarda.
And yes, seedlings die off cause so do their parents.
Tulips don't stay geen much longer after blooming.
I sowed seeds directly in the garden around parents, not in pots.
First spring there was just a tiny leaf (probably the cotyledon???) and nothing else.
You can water the "spot" once in a while, but i am not sure they prefer to be dry when dormant.

Thanks Calin. Tulipa tarda self sows prolifically in my garden and I did know the seedlings would go dormant but tarda doesn't go dormant for me till almost July. I planted the seeds in pots because my first attempt with the sprengeri was direct in the garden and nothing sprouted. I have 3 pots of the sprengeri and still nothing in the garden. I'm not sure if something was eating the seeds out there. Regardless what is my best bet to get them through this dormancy? I'm thinking I should probably put the pots ( without the pot) in the ground not disturbing the root ball and let them fend for themselves.
I think if I try to keep them in the pot for another year they will either dry up too much and die or I'll overwater too much and they die. What's your thoughts on that?

I know. Hard to know how much to water. I may have killed some lilium seedlings with too much water. Or they just go dormant, too???
Well, all I can say, if you indeed have 3 pots with these seedlings, do different things. One in the garden somewhere, the other two keep in pots ...or something.
