My Lady's Mantle isn't a water plant and grows in my garden. The leaves catch the rain and the water appears silver just as in your photo.

Here is my LM.

No, definitely not a water plant. The yellow-chartreause spray over the leaves are the flowers.

I usually sustain large losses when I transplant my lotus, so I don't do it often. I'm sure someone with more experience and knowledge would have less trouble with it, but it's tough for me. They say the growing tips are especially sensitive to disturbance.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

I started some pink lotus seeds last month. Since I don't have a pond I'll have to grow them in large plastic tubs. I also bought some seedpods from Hobby Lobby. I tried growing lotus twice before, but the seedlings always died after they developed 4 floating leaves.

Very nice Cameron. I have seen where people will grow lotus in tubs without any problems. Can't wait to see photos as they grow

Thanks Carolyn, I hope I have more success this time? Do you think a 10 gallon container would be large enough for one plant?

I do not know. I have never grown lotus. There are a lot of people on the board that do grow them. Perhaps they can help?

The lotus I have now is from some seeds I got a couple years ago. It looks like you are doing it right, you have to scarify them to get them to sprout. I planted mine in a wide shallow concrete pot and it grew but never bloomed. I think that was because it was not in full sun. However, it also could have been that the pot was too shallow. There wasn't room for more than about 4" of dirt and a couple more inches of water. This year I have planted them in my roof pond in full sun and with about 6" of dirt and a foot + of water over them. They already have 5 or 6 floating leaves each and hopefully will bloom. The main thing to remember is that they are heavy feeders, I was putting 3 of those small miracle grow plant stakes in the pot every week!

Jonna I hope yours blooms this year. At least they have more room to grow. I read they are heavy feeders but I didn't know they need that much fertilizer lol. Yesterday I went to Lowes to look for some plastic tubs but they only had 20 gal and that would be way more than I needed.

I highly recommend Pond Tabs (water gardening fertilizer) after your Lotus has grown the first season.

NOTE: I am hoping that Dave works out a deal with Texas Waterlilies for a discount on their plants and products (Pond Tabs) sometime in March!
