Building a Greenhouse or Cold Frame out of a Dog Kennel

When we got our Lab pup, Bailey, we decided to buy an outside dog kennel so that she wouldn't get into all of my plants. The idea was that we would leave her in there if we needed to run an errand, instead of letting her have free run of the yard. By the time she was 1 1/2 years old, however, she had only spent an entire 1/2 hour in it. So, it was a wasted $250. Or so I thought! I really wanted a greenhouse, and the kennel made the perfect frame for it!

Mine were white, and came from Home Depot. My neighbor and I bought some at the same time. I had leftovers when we were putting this thing together, and they were the ones I used. She used hers right away on her chicken coop, and I am not kidding, three years later, and not one of them had broken. It's in sun most of the day too. The zip ties were to attach some shade cloth and a tarp.

Ya know, Mary, I think some of them are just better than others. I'm thinking back to a kit I bought for do-it-yourself, custom length zip ties, and those things have lasted forever! I used them to hold a big broken pot together and they held till the pot disintegrated. And that was several years sitting outdoors year round.

On the other hand, there's that container of pretty colored ones DH bought for me. I tried using them to hold a bit of steel panel to a post out front. Ha! Broke after about 6 months!
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

Kind of like those blue ones in one of the pictures? Rolling on the floor laughing My great dollar store find! Hilarious! I slipped them on when DH wasn't looking, and he laughed his head off when they broke about 10 minutes later! Good thing he remembered where the stash of white ones were!

I agree with woofie. We have used zip ties for numerous things & mostly outdoors. Some were worthless & some held & held & held & seemed to never die. The problem is that they never really have a specific brand name on them so you can make sure that's the kind you get next time. Shrug!
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown
