Well, it's the 3rd, but here we go - new thread.

Stan put some second cutting up in the silo today. Not exactly what he wanted to do with it, but this is the first time we've had two days in a row rain-free in quite awhile. There's rain headed in this direction as I type.

Anyway, Happy Fourth, if I don't get back here tomorrow. Family do at noon and who knows what else.

Stan and Marc chopped hay with rain falling around them, on the house, but not the field. Marc said it was neat to be up on the hill and watch the weather come and go. The stationary front might move out sometime next week. They've actually put suns on some of the days late next week.

No rain here. I am a bit surprised there wasn't a ban on fireworks in our county as everything is so dry and crispy! Several neighbors put on quite a display but didn't set anything on fire so all's well that ends well, I guess.

Yesterday I drove north to Bellville to work at a horse trials and all the fields of corn were ready to harvest, and many of the sorghum stands looked almost ready. The cotton was blooming but short for July, still it ought to make a good crop. Very dry everywhere.
We have rain clouds to our east; I hope they are headed our way...

it's been a hot, humid dry week. Lots of hay going in. Stan has been up to Melissa's with the crew (Marc and Jessie and Kelly) days and Melissa comes after work and unloads wagons. They've sold a bunch and might be done with square bales and on to big round bales.

I've been at a writers' workshop afternoons this week. Last night many of those involved came here and we pounded leaves and flowers into silk scarves and then painted the scarves. It was a blast. They were all very serious about their pounding.

Pounding is serious business!

Not as hot as recently here this week - high today 95, humid as always. Just to our west on the other side of the river it rained a total of 2'' since Sunday - we got less than 1/4" but even so the grass is greener in spots, amazing!

oh oh. No farm life here, I live in surbanville. I only wish I had acreage. I really want to keep chickens and grow more veggies than I ever have room for.

Hi Rita! Some suburban areas allow chickens, yours doesn't?

Nope. Totally illegal. And the funny part is that if I lived in any of the areas of New York City they would be legal. Legal in Queens just one county in. But in Nassau County were I am, it is up to the individual towns and in mine it is illegal.

I always do my best to ignore the 4th Of July Fireworks. Too much noise. Hilarious!

So I see on the sticky thread of To All Lurkers that you invite us all to join in . Even if you don't have a farm. Well , no farm animals here in my suburban yard but I do aspire to be a hobby farmer so I grow a lot of veggies. Lots of flowers, shrubs and such too but you would be surprised at the amount of veggies I have managed to cram in and grow on my small amount of land.

I have my grass cut by a lawn service. Have known this guy for years now and always give him home grown veggies. So It is raining today, not hard. I am surprised that he showed up today but he did, just left.

So he was looking to get red ripe tomatoes two weeks ago when he was here and I only had green ones. Asked if he he wanted tomatoes (silly question, I knew he did) so I was out there cutting tomatoes in the rain while they were cutting grass in the rain.

I also cut him cucumbers as I forgot to give him cucumbers last time he was here. I have eatten and given away lots of eggplant these past few days already so there wasn't much in eggplant but I did manage to find some of those smaller asian types to give him and one zucchini. So he goes home with a lot of veggies. He manages to get veggies from me each time he is here. No wonder he likes coming here! Hilarious!

But this is what I mean by saying I am a wanna be farmer. I love to grow things. Especially edibles, especially veggies. My tomatoes plants have threatened to take over my garden for years. Have 60 tomato plants this year. I mean crazy for a backyard gardener. Well, backyard, sideyard and front yard also gardener.

And I had already picked this morning. Have a nice batch of tomatoes sitting on the kitchen counter for myself and already this morning gave tomatoes and cucumbers to various neighbors and friends.

Everyone in the neighborhood knows I garden and grow veggies. I am really popular in the summertime. Rolling on the floor laughing I love to grow them and I love to share.

I really love to grow veggies. If I HAD to choose between veggies and flowers I would choose growing veggies. Very fortunately I don't have to choose between them and can (and do) grow lots of both.

Some years ago I tried to cut back on the veggies thinking I would plant a small amount, just enough for me. Well, that did not work out so well as friends would ask for veggies and I didn't have enough to go around. Soon all the vast amounts of veggies were back. And this year I have expanded to growing eggplant, zucchini and yellow squash. Never grew those before.

It really makes me happy to be able to give lots and lots and lots away.

In my sunny driveway I have a pot getto of my heat loving veggies that I am growing. On the Daylily forum chat thread it got started being called my Driveway Farm. I think it started out as a joke but now we all refer to it that way.

Mostly eggplant and zucchini and yellow summer squash. With some other things thrown in like melons and okra.

Must be really funny to anyone having a real farm that my pot getto could be compaired to a farm. But I had no more room and my driveway is sunny and I wanted to grow summer squash and eggplants. So the driveway farm came to be.
