My century plant has out grown her pot and has 5 pups growing from her. What size pot should I plant her in? And how can I safely transplant her into a new pot without killing myself?

Any pics and current dimensions of pot and plant? Don't agave grow slow in which case you don't have to go that much bigger in pot size unless you are putting the pups in with her? Or if you separate the pups you can plant pups in the old pot. Sometimes the root ball can tell you how much room you need to provide. Some of the biggest plants have the smallest root ball. Some plants also grow bigger with bigger pots. Sometimes, you can control size of plant by size of pot you plant it in.

When repotting: If too big, ask somebody to help you. If prickly and sharp to handle, use towel or blanket to cover sharpness, allow to lay on ground and prevent breakage of leaves and also to maneuver when hoisting or placement.

and with out a picture hard to say. I had a Century Blue Agave. It was way too big for me. To help stop or slow down the growth, I planted it in a smaller pot, used a sharp knife to slice thru the roots, and all the pups, reducing their growth capacity and used regular top soil to fill in the pot. That thing still over grew it's pot and always cut me up when I moved it. I wore heavy winter shirt with welder's gloves. Some help here. Mine was about 3 ft. by 4 ft. wide and had to move it inside for the winters here. With that clay soil, the plant was at the 50 lb. mark. So glad I found a home for it. I also used finger nail clippers to cut the very tip off each leaf. It's not noticeable and keeps it from doing damage to you. Just have to watch out for the spines on the sides of the leaves.

Stush, Sounds like you added a few years to your lifespan by finding a new home for the hard-to-control agave...

I am thinking about selling the more mature of the bunch. the others are barely large enough to separate from momma

Hope you found a solution for your Agaves, there are several kinds, I have the Angustifolia Agave, which is smaller than some of the century plants. It's been on this pot for over 2 years.



The biggest one got "adopted" by my neighbor (pot and all) she placed it by her pool area next to her plumerias.

Please help. I believe I have an angustigolia agave and the leaves are turning yellow and black - I posted a pic of the day I got it, it's been about one week since it left the greenhouse and is turning yellow and then black , I do not see any insects or anything. I live in Wisconsin and am keeping it in full sun, bringing it inside when it gets in the low 40s

Maybe a reaction to being out in full sun after being in a protected space for months? Usually the first leaves to turn brown and die back are the lower ones, for various kinds of stress. Try moving the plant to a more protected location (less than half a day of direct sun) and see if it improves. This could be a temporary phase that your plant passes through while it is building up some resistance to the sun again.
