60 sounds like a good goal for me since I already passed the others. I have tried a few times. Winter is my time though. Summer here is brutal & this is the time of year we reverse hibernate inside in the A/C. Winter is when I get outside doing things.

Neal, how do you store your dug-up bulbs? I have some that could use digging & dividing, as well as a couple of rows in the veggie garden (trenched in when I ran out of oomph).

Once they've cured and any foliage falls away easily and dry soil sloughs off easily, I store them in plastic mesh bags I've saved from bulb orders (onion bags or old nylons work well too). Daffs and Hyacinths stay on wire shelves at room temperature, tulips are hanging from hooks upstairs where its warmer.

I prefer to hang all of them, just don't have anywhere downstairs to hang the daffs and hyacinths. I figure setting on a wire shelf should be fine, they are still surrounded by air that way. If you have an out building or garage, that would be perfect for all of them.

Thanks for the great description! I've got space to hang bags under the basement steps (unfinished, so it's easy to put nails into the framing).

Keep on keepin' on, Neal! Hurray! We're pullin' for ya!

As to the title of this thread..."Fall bulbs -- what are you ordering, and where will you put it?" ...I'm disheartened and whiny today. Sticking tongue out The squirrels are digging up my tulips and eating them, and they were almost ready to pull! No wonder I rarely have any species tulips return; they're a favorite entree.

I guess I'll go back to just ordering daffs and other non-tulip bulbs again...doggone-it. I had hoped that by inter-planting daffs and tulips right next to each other they'd be safer...but I guess not.

Sorry to hear that Chelle, what a bummer. Thank goodness for daffs!

Taking a friend to a physical therapy appointment shortly, so I'll take Brent and Becky's and Scheepers/Van Engelen catalogs and work on narrowing down my orders for this fall. I know I'll want hyacinths and more little bulbs from VE. And speaking of hyacinths, have any of you seen Sky Jacket offered by anyone? That is a soft blue I've had my eye on for years, but for some reason never got around to ordering them. Now I don't see anyone offering them.

So sorry! I can't imagine having to do without all the lovely spring bulbs.

I've been using a bunch of different deterrents, but all it takes is a day or two of rain to render them ineffective, I guess. So sad to see those empty husks next to the holes...and know that I was within a week or so of getting them up and out of grazing range.

Neal -- 6 weeks, I hope? If not, don't lose heart, just try again, 1 day at a time. :-)

Been looking at ADR for fall... if I'm organizing our local group buy again, I want to be sure my favorites make the list! Of course, they are pretty much all my favorites, LOL. This year, though, I think the delivery is going to somebody else's garage!

Yep, 6 weeks today tobacco free, still on the wagon! Thanks so much for the support from all of you, it means so much! Loving having more physical energy, and have been very aware of increased sensitivity in smells and tastes. Also noting that I'm not bothered with muscular pain and soreness after various garden tasks.

Any of you ever grown Calchortus? I tried 3 varieties last fall from Brent and Becky's, Symphony, Golden Orb, and venustus 'Burgundy'. Symphony, a soft pink, has been blooming for a few days- pretty, but kinda small and not real noticeable among all the lush growth at this time of year. All but one venustus Burgundy was eaten by rabbits (or some other rodent), but the remaining one is a beautiful true red. Golden Orb is in bud and should start opening any day. They're interesting plants, remind me of a cross between a tulip and a poppy.

I had green growth the following year, but no blooms. They haven't shown yet this year, so I'm guessing they're gone.

Sorry to hear about your hungry critters...seems like they're everywhere.

I'd still always choose an organic/naturalistic garden though...no matter the losses. We had a hard rain for about 20 minutes this evening and the tree frogs (among others) are presently serenading us with their happiness and joy. Lovey dubby

Same here Chelle, I'd rather grow things that are able to harmonize with the environment here. If they can't do it without chemical help, they don't need to grow in my garden. I'm rather fond of the critters, even if they do tick me off from time to time.

The Calchortus is in the same bed with a lot of tulips, and a random few were nibbled by rabbits, but the one clump of Calchortus must have been particularly tasty. Since the other 2 varieties are looking good, I'll try again.

Another late spring bulb I tried planting in spring last year is Triteleia 'Queen Fabiola'. It's offered in both spring and fall catalogs. Last year they did nothing, just a few random grassy leaves, but they have returned and are going to bloom this year! I'm always on the hunt for blue shades, if they tickle my fancy I'll order more this fall. Maybe fall planting is preferable?

Those are really sweet. How do you keep from pulling them as grass weeds? I fear my Blue-eyed Grass has met that fate, although I tried really hard to be careful!

Maybe I'll try more of these types of plants in the rock garden. It's much easier to keep track of things there, with its much less rampant overgrowth.

The rock garden would be ideal for them. The foliage is glossy and brighter green than grass, but it still is a challenge.
