Surely that would have to be reversed from the way it is in that picture for it to work, or am I not seeing that right?

Bev, that's so true! Being able to take it down would make it possible to repot at some future point, if necessary/desired, or for it to easily change owners, should one feel like gift-giving or selling.

This method could be used to hang a variety of heavy things, and gave me ideas for hanging things in a more mobile/versatile way in our shed. The hooks could be installed on pieces of wood, then hang the 'hooked pieces' with the cleats. Then as one's assortment of crud evolves, the hooks could much more easily be re-arranaged.

I am sooooo glad I found this thread.
I have gone to You-tube videos for answers but was disappointed.
I am new to succulent planting and have gathered a few objects to use as planters.
A few are quite deep.
My question : what do you use to fill the bottom of a 14 inch tall X 7 inch diameter tin bucket?
Is the whole thing filled with soil ?( seems a waste of soil) Wouldnt stone be too heavy?
I use fillers in my annual containers on the deck but smaller containers cant handle cans and peanuts.
What is the minimum soil requirement for succulents?
My containers are drilled so drainage isnt a problem.

I use broken up styrofoam a lot in the bottom of planters.

I wondered if that wouldnt work.I dont use it in 18 inch deck planters.Too messy. These are the containers.I will fill the blue one with peanuts and use another plastic planter inside as a sleeve. The fill will just bring the level up so the plastic sleeve wont fall short.
The snack bowl isnt as ridgid as it looks but stiff enough.I love the color ,that was prime in my choice. Its not completely opaque so filler inside will need to be something else than p nuts maybe.

I will plant next spring. There are "sold outs" on some of the plants I want.

I have been looking at arrangements on line and noticed some in glass containers. Are those just temporary or is there a way to arrange in small glass containers with deeper pebble base and no drainage holes?

i see no reason why you cant do that just water very lightly. I would use nothing that can break down like soil, just rock, and use very light fertilizer every now and then.

Try this type of pot filler called garden genius : http://www.3m.com/brands/garde... I found them at a Walmart store.

The material and texture reminds me of kitchen sponges, so I think you can also use those nylon kitchen sponges found at dollar stores. Then just put a weed fabric on top of it before you add in the soil.

For my succulents in containers, I maintain shallow depth, since I grow most of them outdoors year round, so I prefer to keep the depth like that of a bonsai container, around 3 to 4 inches especially if the plants are still very young. I do use bigger clay pots too and I use fillers like styro peanuts or inverted plastic containers and then weed fabric, then the soil. It is too windy here at times, so containers have to be sturdy and heavy. But just the same the soil is at a depth of 4 inches.

tarev: Thanks so much.
I wish I lived where all succulents could live outside all year round.
The plastic peanuts idea ids great and we get wine by mail and styro comes as cusheoning.I'll make a point of keeping it.

Mark: I saw succulent combos in a Ironstone gravy boat. I just couldnt bring myself to drill out grammas serving pieces.
