Yours might also be a different species of Hollyhock. I notice that the leaves on yours are more deeply lobed than the ones I grow here. There is also this entry, although you can't see the leaves too well: Hollyhock (Alcea rugosa)

Welcome Ada. If you let your hollyhock go to seed, they will likely reseed themselves for you. We always had them growing wild in the alleys of Seattle when I was growing up.

This is one of the few plants that I have no success with. I have no idea why. I have planted seed by the hands full and only raised 4 plants that lasted two years. Torn them out and threw them in the back pit and they grow every year. Go figure.
I know what you mean, Dave! I can't keep the darn things out of the areas I DON'T want them, and can't get them to grow where I DO want them. Kind of like poppies!
