Can you give a few more details?
I would think a 55 gallon barrel would be much deeper than ideal. Maybe clamp the lid on the top, then cut it lengthwise and drill plenty of holes along the bottom.
But a small raised bed may give roots more room and livelier soil than you can create in a large container.
