Thank you, I am going to try that, though I have to wait for a bit dryer weather. So far we have just been trimming like mad every few days.

I realize the question was about aspirin, but I have often seen people recommend Epsom Salt to boost daylily health.

Really? I have only read the Epsom Salt tip for Pepper and tomato plants. Never thought of trying it on my daylilies.

I read more about this online and, unless your soil already has a lot of magnesium in it, it could be of help. The recommendation was 1 Tablespoon to 1 gallon of water, remembering not to spray it on hot, sunny days. It was also stated that it would work better in acid soils (Yay!) Maybe I'll try this too :).

Annette I would add that you should be sure not to compost the (possibly) rusted leaves. If it is rust, that could be warm enough for it to overwinter in your area.

Secondly, epsom salts will help alleviate magnesium deficiency in your plants. In daylilies this is often seen as veining and streaking in the leaves. They have dark green veins with very pale green to yellow between them. It looks similar to chlorosis which results from iron deficiency. When I've seen this I just put a pinch of epsom salt near the base of the plant in question and water it in.

Aha! Bet that's what is wrong with one of my daylilies! I treated it for chlorosis, but it doesn't look much better. Some, but not much. Gotta try the epsom salt!

If you do the aspirin thing, you might want to be sure you are using just aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). A generic brand is probably safest. Many brands have added "stuff" to their tablets. Bayer, for instance, is famous for the coating(?) they use to prevent upset stomachs.

Thank you for all the hints, I had kind of been thinking that Bufferin was not the way to go :).
I have never seen chlorosis in our garden but that may be because there is a fair amount of iron in our soil. In fact, every so often a neighbor will find he/she has hit a pocket of it.
