It seems to be common during mating season. The strongest Buck get the female. So I guess he won that one I just hope he doesn't think the next one will be that easy.
Check out this article I found about a buck that did a head butt on a 640 pound Elk statue.

The big kicker was, the people who bought the house do not garden at all and they want a pool even though it's just a summer weekend home.

When I had four fenced acres in the country and three or four dogs I NEVER had a deer problem. The deer came through from time to time, but they never stopped!

Now that I live in the suburbs and the neighbors FEED the deer I have trouble in the winter. I sprayed this year with Plantskyd. So we'll see if that helps. But that stuff was a PITA. So even if it works I doubt I'll ever use it again.

I sent her a big chunk of Sum and Substance, her favorite hosta here in Southold. She had to pot it up because there, just like here, they have deer! I doubt she'll want to fight the deer problem again.

I have moved twice since I started gardening. The first time was a heart break. I downsized from four acres to a quarter acre!! But I was in an unbearable situation that I had to get out of. So it wasn't all bad. I brought as many plants as I could.

The second move was better! But I spent two days digging up plants with the help of my mom. Then it took another 5 days to replant them all at the new place. I made sure in the contract for the house that the closing had to happen before Sept 20th so my plants could get in in time. Two of the days of planting were in the pouring rain. But I had no choice. I got super lucky and that first winter was amazingly mild! I only lost two plants I think.

@jvdubb, how heart breaking! What a terrible thing to have to go through, I am glad you mother was able to help you but even so, that was a ton of work and I know you were exhausted. Then you got to go inside and figure out where all your stuff is, plus put your bed together before you can collapse! Whistling

I had read an article about deterring deer and posted it on the 'deterring deer' thread, big surprise right? Anyway, this seems perfect for suburbs, they used fishing line to make an invisible fence and they pointed out that the deer are spooked very easily, so you know this invisible fence has got to freak them out real bad.

She did have Ruby on patrol but after a deer killed my dog, she wouldn't allow Ruby to chase them.

I have words for those who feed the deer!

Yes, it kicked his chest and he came home with his lung hanging out. Despite emergency hospitalization, and surgery, he died two hours after the operation. No, not a buck in rut. Neighbors witnessed the deer still chasing our Joey down the block.

Here he is with Suga (no "r"), who is lying down. He was her protector from the moment they met. We got them both from a rescue shelter.

We shed our tears but Suga was inconsolable, wouldn't eat, howled for him constantly. It was a very sad time.

We have the highest rate of Lyme disease and the Town of Southold is helpless to do much since deer control is under the New York State rules, not local.
