I let the plants dry out some and trimmed the foliage back to about 6 inches before I put them in the cellar, it doesn't freeze and no light in there. The ones under the deck didn't get any water because of course they were frozen solid all winter. Rolling on the floor laughing

I downsized by about 13 daylilies. The space they were in is going to be veggie garden space next year.

I am getting rid of a row of seedlings to make more room for tomato plants. My daughter said she would take some.

I am going to move some daylilies this fall. Planning to dig out some roses and make it into a daylily section. Then the section the daylilies moved out of will be more veggie garden space.

Thumbs up Cindy, good going on more space for tomatoes!

What do you do with the plants that you remove?

I am downsizing some irises that I never liked! You could throw extra daylilies in the ditch and see if they survive!

My garage is insulated and also stays around 40 degrees all winter. All those potted day lilies I mentioned in a previous post initially started in my garage in the late fall - where they all came down with Rust and spider mites. That is why I threw them all outside and protected them well.

This might not happen to you, but this was an expensive learning experience for me.

I do wonder if I had tipped those pots on their side in the spring ( which is a tip I picked up later) if they might have survived. Granted, in. A greenhouse or other protected spot, the water can be controlled.

I have also overwintered many other types of plants in my garage, and never had a problem. That year I did.~ Jan

The grower that I bought my daylilies from is in zone 5, all of their potted plants stay outside for the winter, they are turned on their side and covered with leaves, most do just fine. When choosing a plant from the potted ones there, I picked ones that had survived the winter, I figured if they survived in the pot they should survive in the ground here. Hilarious!

I do lots of things with them. Can't bring myself to compost them. I usually give them to friends and family or I sell some on the Lily Auction.
