My guess is they drilled holes in the sides of the bottles, filled the bottles with moss or a light planting medium, moistened it, placed cuttings inside and they grew.

Interesting! Looks like it could be difficult to get them out without too much damage…Though it is quite interesting, and pretty! Big Grin

Just use it to take more cuttings. No need to remove them.

Oooh I get it now, my eyes were wanting it to be like topsy-turvy. Well that's a very interesting idea. It would never occur to me to drill holes in glass. That gave me the idea that something almost identical could be done with a 'can' from Lay's Stax potato chips. They're blue and would be easy to cut holes of any shape/size.

Update from last year, my cuttings didnt make it and I thank you all for all the great info you have posted. The plants did make it through the winter and the color is just starting to come back, so I have a great start already. I will try to root some cuttings again this spring. I cant wait to put these 2 outside. HAPPY SPRING Thumbs up

Christine I love that bear (your avatar) with the tracking collar!!! Do you have them near you.

PS. Our library is having a plant sale as a fund raiser in 4 weeks. Is it worth while planting cuttings now to sell then? I suppose people won't buy them if they look straggly or like nothing?
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

I would give it a try...then again I try anything when it comes to plants. My coleus plants that I kept indoors over winter from cuttings survived and I am in process of taking cuttings from the leggy plants to put in garden in four weeks. I do this every year for the past 3 winters with my favorite colors.

Same here, Judy. I repeatedly take cuttings. This photo was taken Jan. 10th as some reached 30" and now they need cutting again.

glen, I do have bears here, but my avatar is a research bear named Lily from Ely, Mn. I've been following the research bears since 2010. If you like bears check out bear.org and you can watch some of them on cams.

I have several big coleus outside in one of those cheap little greenhouse shelf things. The temp is down to 34°. I hope they do OK.

I hate to bring bad news but coleus dont like it under 50* Some may appear fine after a cold night but in time the leaves will drop off.

Yeah, I know Jo Ann, but there's no space left inside. Something had to go- my begonias that I grew from seeds or the big coleus. The begonias won. If the temps don't drop any more now, they'll hopefully survive, even if they do have some leaf drop.

I have to move a few more things outside today, but tonight's low is supposed to be 48°.

I completely understand Karen it was the best of choices. The begonias would definitely become spinach on a cold night.
