Back to the original question, it's a long list but here is the top 25 for me.

even though it stubbornly refuses to set a pod

Another that is still on the list even though it doesn't seem to be fertile

caitlinsgarden said:Prairie Flame is beautiful with the pallida noid. Is it the one that smells like grape koolaid?

I don't know how to respond to this question, as I've always been baffled by descriptions of iris scent as "like Grape X." Whenever I smell an iris that's been described that way it just smells like an iris. The pallida has a sweet smell, if that means anything Smiling

That's the only one that has a recognizable scent to me. There are supposed to be other scents like root beer? But I can't recognize it.

Gorgeous iris as usual Betty. i grow a number that I ordered from your recommendations and I love them all. Hawaiian Rain did disappoint a little. The flowers were gorgeous but the stalks were weak and willowy. I'm giving it one more year. A friend is going to give me a start of Spectacle next year. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful pictures.

Thanks guys! Paul, HAWAIIAN RAIN has proved to be one of my tallest irises, even though its registration indicates it's about average height. And every year now I have to stake the stalks, along with a few others, because we always seem to get winds or dust storms in April just when they're starting to get tall. So I just automatically stake them with those green circle stakes now. HAWAIIAN RAIN does have its cons, but I adore the blooms and feel that overall the pros win.

Mary Ann, I believe Keith Keppel has FOREIGN SCANDAL, and I think it's just about the most ruffled iris I've ever seen, plus I love the purple colors. It's fantastic!

And Tom, I'm glad you finally got NEBRASKA BIG RED too. It's very deep colored and ruffled, very striking in the garden.

Any suggestion for a true red iris? The blues are great, I wish the dl hybridizers could match them.

Thanks,

I do not think there is a "true red' iris available currently....not as red as a rose or a geranium or begonia. Several hybridizers such as Ghio and Black and others are trying. I think Ric Ernst of Cooleys invested a large amount of money in trying to have a red gene spliced into iris genetics without success. I heard Utah hybridizer Melba Hamblen say that if she found a true red seedling with a single bud that she would introduce it. I don't think the gene is there and won't express as a true red without some mutation happening. I hope this info is correct and invite comment. Similar to the search for true blue in day lilies.

Total Recall gets my vote. It is beautiful, smells lemony, and can be depended on to rebloom in the fall here in Iowa.
