Plant Marigolds as an Ant Deterrent

Do you struggle with sugar ants in the house? Line your walkway with marigolds. Also, when you deadhead the marigolds, crush the spent flowers along the outside of your window sills. Works great as a natural deterrent on ants of all sizes.

Please can you make clear which "marigold" is the ant deterrent - Calendula (Pot Marigold) or Tagetes (French or African Marigold)?

June - I would.. but a quick Google doesn't really tell which variety! I just use the ones that are the cheapo $0.20 seed packets. I'll keep watch next spring to see exactly which seeds these are. I know they look like this:

so I'm guessing these are the Tagetes variety. I've grown those & these as deterrents:

And it looks like marigolds are deer deterrents, too!

Funny thing about this idea is that, when it popped up on my screen this morning, I was thinking, wow, what a great idea! Wish I'd thought of it.. forgot that I had!!! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Thanks, Toni. I have not been growing the Tagetes marigolds, so I will buy some next spring when they are in the garden centers. The Calendulas I grow are really easy from seed - I just throw the seeds onto the ground and rake them in - and they keep on flowering past the first frost (into mid-November, some years). And they self-seed! I have not seen any deer or rabbit damage, either.

Sounds like a "pretty" good idea - worth a try, for sure!
