I'm not a hybridizer but the bees pollinated some of my daylilies. I was going to harvest some seeds as a project for some kids in my neighborhood to try to grow. Yesterday I went outside and found a pod on the ground with a third of it eaten! It got me to realize that other pods had disappeared. What could be eating them? It's weird because I'm in NYC, not a suburban or rural area. The only possible suspects I can think of are squirrels, raccoons, skunks or possums (never seen but are in the area). How can I protect the remaining pods? It can't be anything smaller because we have far too many stray cats for any mice, chipmunks etc to survive. Any ideas, help would be appreciated! Smiling

I haven't a clue, but I am wondering about squirrels? I also wonder if you took some nylon and loosely tied it around them if that would stop it?

I have no answer, I am just throwing out ideas ~Jan

I would say squirrels also. They didn't mess with my seed pods at my old place but they sure did love to pick my buds and blooms off of my Confederate Rose bush and munch on them. They would only nibble on half and leave the rest for me to find.

Hmm. Glare Squirrels make a lot of sense. They always make a meal out if my garden. They've been eating pine cones, tomatoes, all the apples from my apple tree and buds from my neighbors shrubs. I don't have that many more pods left in the backyard so I may try spraying them with a pepper spray I use to keep them from eating all the birdseed in the winter. I wish the stray cats would chase the squirrels away but they are so ornery in the city the cats just leave them alone. They aren't even afraid of hawks!
