How damp should the soil be kept while the cutting is in the pot.
Tiffany i am also afraid you may have a point about the cutting being to large!! I noticed this morning it is wilting some. Another thing what temp. do you bring the 'angel wing' in/how cold can it stand without any problems. We are having days in the high 70's at the coolest.I am hoping this plant makes it a year.

Oh I meant I would wait to take bigger cuttings if I had more patience because only the smallest ones seem to fail. I don't take any risks with frost with any Begonias (besides wax.) There's a scary night coming up here soon, Friday says 37, need to keep an eye on that.

Usually I'm putting cuttings in a pot with something else already growing. By itself, it would be pretty important to let it dry well before adding more water. Until it gets roots going, it can't use the moisture. That's why I try to stick cuttings as deep as possible, so the tip is really low, where the soil dries last. If it's wilting a little, try removing some of the largest leaves. Some like to use some type of dome or cover to hold in the humidity, as mentioned above.

I hope it works for you too, with the mama and the cuttings. Sending good vibes!

watching the weather,Hoya's coming in by Thurs. it's suppose to be getting cold thurs. night i believe.Keeping an eye on epi's & rhipsalis's not sure what they can take. But begonia is coming in as well.I wish the sun would come out,it's been cloudy for at least a full week.

I have found plants do better when its gets cool at night if the sun has been out to warm the soil during the day.I could be wrong about that but it just seems like it to me. Shrug!

I agree with that logic. Wherever they come from, plants would naturally experience fluctuations in temp, 20-30 degrees difference between day/night. I'm not fan of gray skies either, having the same thing here. At least it's still warm enough to have windows open, though Friday night looks like some heat may be required - 37 already?! Just one night, but that's pretty cold if you're a tropical plant (or wannabe tropical person!)

Hey there, I have a Angel Wing Begonia that someone gave me that was rooted in just water. Once it produced what looked like a good amount of rooting, I transplanted in it's own pot. It's doing well and now I need to trim it back. They seem to root pretty easily. Happy planting!

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
I have many begonias--as well as an older one which has been around
since 2006. I keep it going by pruning and propagating.
This BIG AWB comes in for the winter. In the spring--I cut the top off of the plant and then
the stem down to near the pot to re-grow. I discard the cane-like stem. No need to keep it.
About every 3 years--I take the AWB out of the pot, root-prune it, discarding the older roots
and then re-pot it in fresh soil. It re-grows very well--and by mid-summer--I have my
huge plant back again--and, usually, it will bloom nicely as fall approaches.

I root all my Begonias cuttings in water as well. It keeps them fresher that way.
In soil--they may root--but it takes longer--and often you will lose some leaves.

Here is my OLD AW which was cut back, root-pruned and re-potted in spring.

This is taken in August--ready to pop into bloom.

Those look amazing!

If one wanted more, keeping all of the cut-off piece(s) would be a way to do that. If they are long enough to make 2 pieces & that is what is desired, that's great. I like the biggest possible stem as a cutting.

I liked his explanation that you should have two good buds buried to get a fuller plant
Plant it and they will come.

I have this beautiful plant I bought for $5 last year. It was kinda scrawny through the winter but I kept it mostly inside. Now that I have been sitting it outside it has started growing like crazy and has gotten taller and taller. I would like to plant some of it in another pot but I don't know how. Can anyone help me? Thx

I know Brad's has excellent advice, I recommend that site too, but propagating cane Begonias is really as easy as cutting a stem & sticking it in same or another pot. Should take about 10 seconds.

I agree, Tifffany, they are super easy.
I was fascinated with Brad's showing putting two nodes in the dirt, and getting a new branch from under the soil that way.
Plant it and they will come.

Yes, that's expected. I've seen my cuttings do that countless times. That's how 1 plant can turn into 15-20 in a couple years, depending on the size of the starting plant.
