I do have some of the tiny webby, ones that form tall clumps, that have burned on the sun side of the clump. But the other webby/fuzzy ones that grow in flate clumps haven't burned.
I'll try to remember to take some photos tomorrow afternoon.

Yes you're right I have 'Affine' and one other that I can't remember at the moment, I have to shade those ones, but Ali, and tomentosum, and other arachs seem to love the sun!

Hookerii burns on the sun side.
Nothing stops Ali, Cebenense and Cobweb Buttons. I'll have to do an inspection of all the webby ones and give a report.

That's a good idea! This summer was a good example of summers for the rest of the usa, (meaning normally it isn't as close a comparison, weather and sun wise!)
I tip my hat to you.

Thanks you two for the willingness to investigate.
I like the arachs and love the fuzzy and ciliated, but hate putting the time in to care for them and not have them thrive. I just may not have the right conditions for them. My DH mentioned that my semp bed may be affected by the sun and heat reflected off the guest windows onto some white tile and the semp bed. This may account for a bunch of my semps getting fried early this summer. I had to resort to shade cloth to cover entire bed in PM sun of 4 hours duration.

Bev, I agree with everyone elses experience with the arachs.

I get rotting faster with them than the other semps when we get too much rain.

I find they tend to grow better by *themselves*, rather than in close proximity to other varieties.

I have thought Allelopathy is at play here and the arachs are more sensitive to it, possibly.

Very interesting, Janice....now I have to go and look up allelopathy to see if it means what it means...
OK, back again and yes, very interesting....Dictionary asked:" What made you want to look up allelopathy? Please tell us where you read or heard it" and so I gave them your name... Hilarious!

I had thought to separate the arachs from the other non-arachs but really didn't like them all by themselves (they looked like an old folks home; you know, with all the white hair and/or unshaven stubbies). So I have been trying to incorporate them back into the general population but being more mindful of where I put them. So far a few are doing OK mixed in. What I like about the arachs in the general population is that they serve well as accents amongst the color (mostly green, right now).

Like you, I think the arachs are so beautiful when contrasted with other type Semps and I do arrange them in the mixed population for effect.

Lovey dubby Yours look beautiful!!! Hurray! Hurray!

I just think when I want fast increase or for the arachs' growth to really take off, they seem to prefer their own territory. Smiling

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Still laughing over the old folks home statement.
I do have to agree with what you said about the arachs being a great accents amongst the other types of semps. Especially this time of year.
Nice photo of the arach snuggling up to the green semp. Wonder if they are planning a wedding?

Janice, I tend to give them space and find that they do also seem to multiply faster. Might just be my imagination. They really do prefer to be in a nice sized colony.

Jo Ann, come next year they will be taking over. Do you have a photo of the ones that used to grow in the pea gravel. That would be so much fun to see.

I understand. I never spent this kind of time with plants when I was younger. To busy raising children and gardening to produce food for the upcoming year.

I moved to the far burbs and have a lot of time on my hands.
Gardening and taking photos keeps me from going utterly out of my mind, advancing age is cutting into my time but I finished what I started on this barren plot 6 years ago.
These garden websites are a great help.I hope the moderators never become blase about what a valuable service ATP provides.
