I have had and killed every green fiscus I purchase but if they have a color I do not have problems keeping them alive.

These were all little 3" pots that have grown into trees in 2 years.

Well, how about that! I never knew they were in the ficus family. I just lost a Tricolor Rubber Tree. It just didn't winter over well indoors after being outside. That picture makes me want to try again.

You know what I do not water them but every 2 months in the winter. They lose a couple leaves but make up for it in the summer.

You probably have it inside for a shorter length of time than me. Try it again and give it very little water.

OMG.... Ficus elastic is such an invasive weed here...! If you cut the roots...with a 2 foot piece taken out of the cut...they will grow back together. Yikes. I wish I could send you some of the energy!!! All I can suggestion with tropical is...fresh air/circulating air. Critical to them here.
It's all about choices.

Oh I do love stories that tease like that! If winter didn't "fix" some of my experiments, that could be a problem! I'd have nowhere to plant stuff at all the next year, mainly.

I had the "plain" green kind for years but didn't consider it plain. The bright red cataphyll around each new leaf is (was) really cool, striking.

That is funny Carol. My love of tropicals is because of my travel and vacations took me to warmer climates than I live. I would see people cutting down plants that we baby through the winter after spending exorbitant amount of money.

I was on business trips and in my business suit and heels digging in dumpsters in front of hotels gathering plants they were throwing away that I had been trying to order.

When I was in Hawaii I was just amazed at the beauty.

In Puerto Rico I got some plants at a business friends home in a area that she called her weeds that she would cut down and throw away.

This is what she called weeds to be cut down and thrown away.

That weed pic looks more like a fantasy garden to me. There's some "fancier" elephant ears at a store in the next town over that look kind of like that. They're $30! The tag says they're only hardy to Z9 though, so I'm not getting into it. Hilo beauty didn't show back up after last winter (that really wasn't winter, with a low of 25 for the season,) and right next to where it was, a Persian shield bloomed in the middle of January, so I'll stick to C. esculenta. If I had a basement here, that would be another story!

Wonder why I don't have any Ficus at all at the moment? Guess I haven't seen a cute little one since I accidentally killed the big one a few years ago with cold. Probably for the best, I get dermatitis (a rash like poison ivy!) if I get latex sap on me.

Alex, if you feel like it, I'd love to see a pic of your plant!

In this climate i let mines get nipped by frost and then store them in 45 degrees iwth the dahias and cannas. I mist them monthy to keep them alive. In march i bring the elephants ear and put them in containers and grow them until about mid may when they go outside, slow to star but when they do look out Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!
