A friend and I went to lunch and parked next to a tree with these nuts; we both think they are some kind of chestnut.
Which is this?
I've eaten roasted chestnuts before and seen them at the Asian stores but they don't look like the ones sold (one side is flat).

Looks like American Chestnut (Castanea dentata): http://www.google.com/search?q...

Oops, maybe I spoke too soon? Definitely looks like a variety of Chestnut but I'm not sure the American Chestnut grows that far west; maybe it's C. ozarkensis or possibly C. pumila?

It's not a chestnut, rather it's an oak of some kind. Most likely, Sawtooth Oak (Quercus acutissima):

*Blush* Kent: you are so good! Thank you for identifying Betsy's mystery plant! I should have enlarged her photo's but that nut sure looked like a chestnut to my old eyes. Green Grin! Thank you for those great links too!
