I found this plant on an abandoned field with rubble. No flowers unfortunately but full of the typical lanterns with berries inside.
The small berries of the young ones are purple, the berries inside of the older lanterns get much bigger and are green with a purplish hint at the base. The height of the plant was about 90 cm (3ft).

I've been searching on the web, but cannot find any real match..
Any help very much appreciated! Smiling

Thank you terrafirma, but I don't think the shape of the lanterns really fit that one..

'Amazing'! You must have heard that so often Janet, but I cannot help saying it again! Hilarious!
Sure Nicandra phisalodes it will be, perfect match! Hurray!
No wonder I didn't find a match with the genus 'Physalis' but both have have so much in common!

Thanks a bunch! Thumbs up

*Blush* I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

I went through all the Physalis first .. Hilarious!

I had a feeling it might be another genus in the same family though.

Thanks terrafirma, I've been likened to a Terrier. Rolling on the floor laughing

I new it had "physa" in the name, but not in the genus. It's an annual that I grew 10+ years ago. They still pop up, and one came up this season that I let grow, and I was just trying to remember the name the other day. How fortuitous that you posted this query, Myriam! Thanks!
Incidentally, it produces enough seed to sow an acre, so if anyone wants any......

And look at that Silybum marianum..... it's 48 inches across!!! (from leaf tip to leaf tip)

What a nice coincidence Rick!
You have there a very prosperous one! Smiling I like the plant so I might go back later where I found it and collect some seeds.
I like the Silybum marianum too!

Funny thing is that I had a visual memory of the Nicandra physalodes, I had met before also on a rubble field some years ago, (even had added pics of it in the database I had forgotten about! Rolling my eyes. ) but didn't recall its name either..

I took a branch of the plant home and put it in a vase and today it opened one of its beautiful blooms.
