In the front row I will grow 3 husk tomatoes. in the last row maybe 5 tomato plants. I don't need to stake the husk tomatoes because they only grow a foot tall. I won't stake the other tomatoes individually. I surround the plants with wooden stakes and then run garden rope top to bottom on the stakes and as the plants grow I rest the branches on the rope.

I want to wish everyone a happy and safe New Year.

We will be travelling to Islip Long Island for the eve which we have been doing for the past 25 years or so. Our cousin Mike has been hosting the e3ve for that long and at 10pm he has a Chinese restaurant bring in about 15 different dishes for us to eat. Thee is plenty of food because ethere are over 50 people at these parties. I will post some pictures of the place. It is quite remarkable.

What are husk tomatoes? The only husk tomato types I know about are Tomatillos and they grow quite tall.

Husk tomatoes may refer to Physalis ixocarpa (tomatillo) or several of the species of Ground Cherry (Physalis virginiana, Physalis pubescens var. integrifolia ,Physalis peruviana) some of the ground cherries are low growing.

farmerdill - you are right on the money

Rita - i copied this

The ground cherry is very similar to the Cape gooseberry, both having similar, but unique flavors.

10 - 15 seeds $1.99 Qty:

from: Valley View Ranch - Healing Land

Small orange fruit similar in size and shape to a cherry tomato; the fruit is covered in papery husk.

Flavor is a pleasant, unique tomato / pineapple like blend.

The ground cherry is very similar to the Cape gooseberry, both having similar, but unique flavors.

Small shrub similar to the common tomato can be grown as an annual or perennial.

Plants are usually small, only 1-3ft in height. They enjoy full sun, fairly warm (but not hot) temperatures, and protection from frost. In areas where frost or freezes occur, plants are easily grown as annuals.

Provide lots of water throughout the growing year, except towards fruit ripening time.

Grow in most soil types and will do very well in poor soils and in pots.

Plants are susceptible to many of the same diseases and pests as the tomato.

start indoors 8 weeks before time to set in open ground; cover thinly, then pack firmly and water;

when plants are about 2" high, transplant to 3" apart in flat or pot; after danger of frost is past, set 2' to 3' apart in garden, but before doing so, harden the plants gradually exposing them to the outdoors air for about a week.

Whats great about them is that you never have to pick them off the vine. when they are ripe they simply fall to the ground.

Thanks Frank. I had never heard of those ground cherries. Be sure and let us know what you think after you grow them. That is if they fruit well and you like the flavor.

Franklin,

If you go back to the first posting on this thread we're talking on, you will see how 6 plants separated by 3 plants look on two separate panel trellis'. They do fill in and will climb. I hope this helps, and get over that stomach problem soon! Smiling

To All - Have you given any thought about joining us in Ocean City Maryland this coming September. We got special rates at the Days Inn of $101.00 per night which includes all taxes. Most rooms have two double beds and balconies facing the beach, boardwalk and of course, the ocean.

Thee is so much to do there. Just go to www.ococean.com

At the top of the page click onto "things to do" .

You can make your visit as long or as short as you like.

It is still very nice beach and swim weather and the food prices are very reasonable.

Hope some of you can join us. Poker players are very welcome but you don't have to do anything you don't want to do.
