Glad to see you made one! They truly are the best way to propagate most things that are difficult to root. If it will even root an Echinacea cutting, then it's a good thing! LOL.

Don't believe all that crap about "water roots." These plants are ready for planting really soon after those roots appear. I have even let the roots get over 5-6 inches long and then potted too. Roots are roots. Period. I haven't lost a single plant that was rooted in my EZ Clone machine. You just need to be careful when planting them, but once you get used to it, it is all easy. You will not ever want to go back to rooting them any other way. No wilting and suffering and losses. It's practically 100% success for Hibiscus cuttings.

I disagree Clint .. consider this, roots grown in water have absolutely no resistance as they elongate which can make for weaker and thinner cell walls as compared to roots grown in soil which literally have to push their way through it which causes thicker cell walls. I've actually compared the two under a microscope.

That tends to happen with some seedlings that are started indoors in my experience. The cells in the stem are not flexed like they normally would be outside with wind, breezes and rain so the cell walls of the stems that encounter no resistance or flexing tend to be thinner and more fragile. That's why I always 'pet' my seedlings when I start them indoors or use an oscillating fan. I find my seedling are stronger and more robust when I plant them out.

Oh it does indeed work! And it is most excellent for rooting the stubborn stuff.

I have never seen one of these cloners and most of what I know about them I have learned here, so this is just speculation on my part. But I think that the spray from the water hitting the roots and the air circulation created by the spray, would tend to strengthen the roots in much the same way as an oscillating fan would help the stem of seedlings.

Jay, I considered that too, but apparently not as much as pushing through dirt. I've noticed that they tend to break off where they are coming out of the stem and you have to be very careful when you transplant - I've never seen this in roots grown in a denser medium like soil or vermiculite .. those roots are way more pliable.

Try letting the roots grow longer next time. They are easier to break when they are shorter.

Hi everyone. This is mine. I've had this for a few years and love it.
Thumb of 2013-10-20/springcolor/8dd832 Thumb of 2013-10-20/springcolor/f0bd2a
I have a pond pump, rock bubbler and, a fish tank heater on the bottom of the container.

Thumb of 2013-10-20/springcolor/f8dcde The roots, looks like I need to pot up.

It's out side right now but will soon get moved back into the greenhouse.

Clint, the short roots were not breaking .. it was the root over an inch and a half long that were breaking.

Julia, I cut the bottoms off of my net pots so I wouldn't have to pull roots through them.

I expect all to root. A few of my large up right sedums didn't root but they were already going dormant so they may be why. I leave the baskets whole to make the water spray finer. These have just been in there too long. I love this thing.

I had to go on vacation and my Hibiscus roots got huge! These roots are very healthy because they have so much oxygen around them. I think I'll leave my Hibiscus cuttings longer from now on. The roots were impressive! Glad you like your machine! It really is addictive!

Oh my gosh, they are all very impressive! I wish I had the time to build one myself or the extra $ to just buy one Hilarious! there are so many things I want to propagate that just don't seem to take in water or with Rooting hormone.

How much of a cutting do you need, or does it vary by plant?

I'm thinking you mean how long does the cutting need to be .. since the neoprene insert is half an inch thick, the cutting has to extend beyond that - I'm noticing that vines like the passiflora shoot out roots from everywhere up and down the stem and have had cuttings only 3/4 of an inch long with just a quarter inch sticking out, root like crazy .. nodes not required and other more woody plants like Synsepalum and Radermachera make the most roots around nodes.

With and without the cloning solution, I'm astonished at how fast some plants are rooting for me - especially the stubborn ones. I gave up on the distilled water and just use water from the hose .. only mister jet clogs I've gotten is from plant material that has fallen down.

I'm already planning to make a much bigger cloning machine next year - instead of just 9 slots I'm shooting for 25.
