If you're bringing the whole plant inside, won't the figs ripen inside as well as out? I've never grown figs, but I do recall visiting an older Italian couple living at the edge of downtown Seattle (lower Capital Hill) with a wonderful fig tree and tons of fruit. Sadly, I believe their little 6 unit apartment building is now a parking lot.
