A kind lady who visited my place once and saw the miniature gardens I do, brought this to me a week later as 1 tiny piece 3 years ago, and wasn't sure what species it was. She told me, (And I was skeptical) that it was a true dwarf whose leaves rarely even get to 1 inch each each if that. This has become one of my favorite plants, and everything she told me is true. They look like tiny Elephant Ears in the small gardens.

There is a Syngonium called 'Pixie', that may be referred to as a "dwarf". It is a Syngonium podophyllum 'pixie'. Cute!

Thats as close as I could ever find too Tara. I've hoped this lady would show up again. She has huge greenhouses from what she tells me and has traveled the world collecting plantsa re her words...She said she was heading to Laos to collect seeds when she stopped by to give me the Syngonium and a few other odd plants and cuttings. She said the tiny Syngonium was very unusual in it size. "Pixie" they say gets 18" high but I have 3 or 4 tiny clumps of these and none of them seen to be pressing North of 3 inches. Other sites and research has told me there is no such thing......Ah well........

Wow! 3"…That IS tiny! A miniature dwarf! Yikes...

How adorable!! After living here for 5 years, I realized after digging them up, the "mini Caladiums" in my yard were really Syngonium. No bulbs, and other obvious differences. They've been in a pot for about 18 months now and are finally showing signs of making vine parts. Do you get frost there? My plant(s) always went dormant until I dug it up, brought it in last winter. It's actually 6-7 tiny individuals. The biggest leaves I ever saw in the ground were about an inch, but some of the plants are making leaves several inches now. I figured that's all it had a chance to do between recoveries from cold winters. Could something like that be the case for yours, keeping it so small? I'd love to see a closer pic of the leaves, if you feel like putting one up. I thought all Syngoniums were vines, but maybe not...?

Thanks for sharing,... and the reason is that these little guys (that I've only separated a couple of times in a couple of years) never seem to vine and act like clumpers. Now thats a thought. Maybe they are something other then Syngoniums!?

I do have many Haworthias in the miniature plantings and pots I do Tara. Maybe you were seeing another plant in another thread including this one?

Anyway, one of these days! In my new thread on container gardens including this plant, there are Haworthias and the pink looking ones are Starfish Bromeliads. I love those little guys too, and use them in many situations all over the place.

David, are the leaves on your little syngonium " rough ?" I have a tiny one popping up in a pot where I didn't plant it. It's much smaller than yours, but I'll have to take a pic of it tomorrow. I'm very interested seeing yours, as I thought mine was possibly a caladuim until I felt the edges of the leaves.

No, David, I meant in this pic. that you posted…To the right of the syngonium, right in front of the dinosaur…Tiffany was wondering if it was a Tillandsia, and I said I thought it was a Haworthia.

Oooohhhhh!!! Sure. Thats a little airplant. Tillandsia ionantha (Guatemala). They turn a really pretty hot pink in the Winter and put up purple and yellow flower stalks;...another great litlle plant.

David, does this look anything like your syngonium? Mine popped up in a brug pot over a month ago. I know I didn't plant it there. It possibly came from a 75% off pot from a big box store. The edges of the leaves are saw-toothed.




terra firma, I Googled your suggestion of possibly ID and that led me to a "mini" version of the pixie. Syngonium podophyllum 'mini pixie' It's sure close!

I was wondering if frost knocks this back annually, or some years (as much as you can tell from a 3-year relationship?) If so, it's "Syngonium-ness" could be something you'd never see, the vine growing. You'd just have basal (re-)growth.

And yes, Caladium leaves are so similar. Like I said, I looked at this plant for years, thinking Syngonium was Caladium, then decided I could see it better elsewhere, so got the shovel out and - surprise! No bulbs. If there is a bulb, it's not Syngonium, to the best of my knowledge.

Either way, I love it, miniscule plants are some of my favs!

Thought that was a Tillandisa. I got one and put it in the crook of a little Dracaena tree. Looks like a mama with a baby in a pouch, IMO - LOL!

Forgot to say, a close examination/comparison of leaf veins may help, as well as petioles.

I have had these nearly 3 years now and have only separated them once. It was very bushy and only separated into 4 stocky bushy little individuals. All my other Syngoniums are large and grow like weeds. This tiny one seems to be a clumper, not a viner, and the measuring tape shows the largest any leave has ever gotten; under 1 inch! Never any higher than three. I have all 4 planted in the same little garden box in different areas and hope to get them growing faster so I can make more and more!

In the Winter, I set a pole frame over the entire planter box so I can cover it without crushing everything with the cover. I then set a bulb socket with a 75 watt bulb I spray painted red under the tent in the middle and it keeps everything very comfortable! Thanks for asking.
