I need to purchase some 7" or 10" write on vinyl plant tags. I used to buy them from Earth Star Inc. They also sold them on the Lily Auction but I dont see them on there any more. The size isn't that important or the color. I've been using old mini blinds since I ran out but would like to get more of the vinyl tags for next year.

Hi, Paula
Here is a link that might help. I believe it is the same supplier but looks like he is going out of business.

I use a Sharpie permanent marker. Somethings it stay on well. Others not so much. I wrote on my hybridizing tags with it and the sun faded them. I wont do that again. But it works well on vinyl tags and my wooden garden stakes.

I use a black paint pen. They do not fade one bit. I think I bought it at a craft store.

I used to get those nursery marker flow pens from Earth Star and luckily bought extras, since they're out now, and they are fantastic. I used to use Sharpies, but no more -- they do not weather at all -- totally disappear within months.

You can get the paint markers at walmart for less than $2.00, they are in the craft section These are the best ones we have found that do not fade if you use black. We have used the red which fades to yellow and we have used blue which fades also. We have tags in the black from who knows how many years ago that still look pretty newly written.

I agree The Elmer's black paint pens from Wal-mart are so much better than the Sharpies. Sharpies are faded beyond reading in a year. For garden markers I use the p-touch label maker with TZ tape. Some of these have been in the garden since 2002 and still look new.

I use the p-touch label maker also for the garden marker and they are great. I usually find the TZ tape on Amazon for less than what you would pay in the store (sometimes not). The paint markers I use for pot labels and I always put a tag in the ground with the plant just in case the garden markers get moved or something then I still can know what the plant is. I have used the Sharpie paint markers also and I found that they fade rather quickly.

I will have to check at our local walmart for those markers. I need something all purpose that wont fade, so I dont have a bunch of pens for different things. I have used paint pens( not the Elmers Brand) in the past for gardens stakes and they work well but the tip always dries up and then you end up trying to clean it or throwing it out.

The Elmer's brand is a little different on the tip. It will get kind of dry sometimes from lack of ink not paint drying on it (just depending on how long you use it at a time) but you just push down on the tip to get more paint flowing into the tip or if all else fails I turn the tip around. During this time of year when we are dividing we write thousands of plant tags for the pots and on the garden markers we stick in the first pot of each plant and we don't have any problems with the Elmer's brand.
