My Sedum Angelina do not self seed. But any time a piece breaks off it just starts up where ever it lands. It is by far the easiest plant I have ever had.

I'm not looking for something fire retardant. Just something pretty for a ground cover in one area!

Jennifer, I had mentioned a few posts back that I had some sedum growing here, and I may transplant some of it to other slopes. I do like the plant, but it doesn't bloom very long from what I've seen. I had some at my last house that was growing on rocks, so it's a good one for the area where I live! I have lots of rocks! I think I'd rather have something else though, for this one area. Something that blooms a lot longer!

I actually can't stand the blooms on most of my ground cover sedum! LOL But Angelina does change colors with the seasons. But I do understand why it isn't your choice for that area.

I've had some sedum blooms that I adore, and some that I can't stand! I do love the ones that change color though, and I agree that the foliage is much better than the flowers on those! I may end up going with a mixture of things in this one area, and a little bit of pretty sedum would look nice mixed in. I may take all of the suggestions here and just mix them all together, until I decide which one is my favorite!

Would it be possible for you DH to hammer in some stakes (maybe PVC pipe) so you will have something to hold on to when you are planting stuff? Also if you go into a roll, something will be there to stop you. Whistling

Good idea, but DH can't stand on the slope either! I think I'll just lay down on my stomach, and work that way. It has to be safer, right? Hilarious! Luckily it's not a long cliff. It does flatten out a little way down. We can easily get down to the flatter part from another direction. I'll do what I can, and hope stuff spreads fast!

Gardening keeps me connected to the
Origanums will cope with that spot, and there are a variety to choose from. There are some prostrate ground covering Grevilleas that are hardy in zone 8a, not sure about 7a though, but they never need watering and flower for a long time. Can you grow California Poppy (Escholtzia), I think they would tough out the slope. Any hardy succulents would be good. Some ground cover roses are amazingly tough too, especially the newer lanscaping ones.

Thanks Vanessa! I'll look into those. No California Poppies for me. I grew up in California, and have seen enough to last a lifetime, but the others could be a possibility. I'll have to look them up!

My latest 'jolly' plant (my euphemism for one that might be a bit too aggressive) is Euphorbia Fens Ruby (or Ruby Fens, I always forget which way). It spreads quite happily, has good foliage spring through fall, flowers in mid-summer, and has good winter seedheads. I'm rather liking it and plan to let it colonize at the top of a slope I'm working with. No clue how it might interact with the existing pasture grass, but we shall see.

Another thought is arnica which may be native for you, and/or borage for a blue pop.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Thanks Deb. I'll look those up when I get home. We're on vacation until Sunday. Finally got to a campground with wifi a bit ago, and thought I'd check in! We're on the Columbia River in Washington, and I think it's time to take a nap!

Debra, does that oregano get tall? I had some at my house in Utah that I liked, but it grew taller than I'm wanting for this one spot. It did spread good, but I wasn't all that crazy about the bloom on it. I did taste good though! Hilarious!

I think these might work. They do well for me.

Delosperma cooperi - blooms from April to November for me or when the frosts hit. Cuttings of these root in a matter of days just by sticking pieces in the ground. It would be an excellent choice in my opinion.

The good thing about Sedum 'Angelina' is it doesn't have to bloom. The foliage is great all year round. You might try planting patches of it and other drought tolerant plants. Add some Sedum 'Blue Spruce' too.

It's not really a ground cover, but Yucca 'Color Guard' would make some great color in spots too. It looks good year-round and gets pink tints in winter. Maybe use it as focal points in certain areas. I think it may be my favorite plant of all plants for year-round interest. Also consider getting Hesperaloe 'Red' and 'Yellow.' There is a dwarf version called 'Brakelights' that is good. These multiply easily from divisions. I have rooted so many this past year. Nothing attracts humming birds like Hesperaloe.

I'm experimenting with Delosperma 'Wheels of Wonder.' The series is supposed to be very hardy and they seem to bloom a very long time. If the heat tolerance is good, it would be perfect. It's available in 6 colors.

Add in some Agastache too.

I would use some ground covers, but mix in larger plants in the background. You can't go wrong with that Yucca.
