Thread OP

Hi-

I live in NY and fall is upon us. My knockout roses are doing REALLY well! They are huge and I was wondering when I should trim them back? Do I wait until they die a bit (they have a ton of new growth and are flowering still), or do I cut them next spring?

I don't grow Knockouts but have many other roses. I do a little cosmetic pruning in the fall but the bulk of pruning in the spring just as the leaf buds begin to break.

I just read this article about pruning roses this morning written by Zuzu. I think it is one of the best rose pruning articles I have read in years.

I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.

I hardly prune anything, also. I wait til spring and just take off all of the darkened winter will on the branches. Zuzu is right. Pruning is almost uneccesary unless the branches look dead.
