I love Plantstep and like Spunky I back my records up with a notebook and a cardfile. I usually spent my evenings doing records.
I need to learn to back up on a CD cause a recent virus ate all my files. I was able to get back some of my pictures by going through the DG files one by one till I found some of my photos. Some that I know I put on DG I couldn't find still it was great not to loose everything altogether.

Hi all!

Laura, I have found a way to use Plantstep to print out a detailed list of new purchases only. You have to complete the "location" field for the new plants, and I use "none" for the plants I haven't received yet. Then I go to Reports - type "none" in the location box, and click Garden Map. This produces a list with photos, plant characteristics, hybridizer and year. I just used my list today to try to figure out what I'm going to plant where.

I will have to try that, sounds very useful. Of course, I will have to enter all the other in locations first. LOL I have not gotten around to doing that yet.

That is a great idea. I'm always learning something new about this program. It just does so much! Now, if I can just remember it all. Blinking
I think we need a hints and tips forum for plantstep. Smiling

I only have 128 varieties to keep track of. I made an Excel spreadsheet with information from the AHS website. I turned the spreadsheet into an html document which is part of my DL website. I have the website backed up on a CD and an external drive and on a server. I use metal markers, but no map except in my head. A huge tree fell on one of my beds in December. I'm sure all my markers are squashed under it. Can't stress about it until my DH gets that monster removed. Then I can have my fit!

The Plantstep program sounds interesting. I wonder if it's available for Macintosh.

a mac user told me there is a program that lets mac users run it on their computers. I'm a pc person so I can't tell you specifically how or what but there is a way. From what she said it was a free program she used to do this.

I didn't know you could set it up to automatically back up files? I'm using Carbonite online because I didn't want to have to remember to back up all the time. I could have saved myself some money had I known. Blinking Oh well, Carbonite isn't really all that expensive I guess. Glare Smiling

On-site and off-site back ups can be a good idea. Fire or flood are just two of the reasons for an off-site back-up.
