Dave is there a way you can set the 'Proposal' area to decline a duplicate entry when I click on Approve?
When there a 200 or 300 hundred proposals from more than on person, it is not easy to know if duplicate proposals have been made.
Some I catch, others are slipping through the cracks. Sad

Not really. The duplicate checking occurs only when the proposal is first made. So it's up to the moderators to make sure that duplicate proposals aren't submitted.

Would sorting the moderation queue alphabetically by name put the duplicates right next to each other?

Maybe add a button that produces a report from the moderation queue listing just pending names in alphabetical order.

I don't think this happens often enough to warrant extra programming. There are simpler ways of detecting duplicate proposals of new plants. If the moderator goes to the alphabetical page of the genus, where the new plant will appear after approval, and sees that it's already there, the proposal must be a duplicate.

Oh!

I thought the problem was when a plant not yet in the database at all, was added into a moderation queue twice (before either proposal was approved into the main database).

In other words, a way to search the moderation queue for more than one entry with the same name. I was also assuming that the database did not update instantly each time a proposal was approved - as if there was a batch process that only ran occasionally.

So ignore the idea. "Assumption makes an ass of me and umption."

Rick that is my problem, a long list from more than one person proposing the same name.

That's quite a coincidence that two people would submit the same plant near the same time like that. How often do the proposals wait in the queue before they are approved (or declined)?

Once a proposal is approved, then future proposals for that plant will stop because at that point the duplicate checker can work.

We are running into trouble with it not always denying a new proposal when there is an entry.

Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Prim and Proper')

When there are over 200 proposals to do it takes awhile to get through the list of new proposals. The new plant has to be verified and hybridizer information added to each one.
Can there be a way to notify some one that a proposal has already been submitted?

It shouldn't take that long to get through new proposals. The verification process is understandably necessary, but couldn't you add the hybridizer information after all of the new proposals have been processed?

Rick, to answer your question: The search takes some time to update, but the plant is entered in the database immediately, so looking on the database page where the new entry will go will tell you whether the plant is already there or not. If you're working with a series of proposals that might be in alphabetical order and therefore would go on the same page of the database and if there is a chance of duplicates, it's important to refresh the page to make sure no new plant of the same name has been added.

That's easy, Lynn. Just go to this page and click on "or see recent additions." Smiling

An extra point to make: a few members have asked that they be removed from the "Duplicate Plant Checker" system. That means the system does NOT check for duplicates when they are proposing a new plant be added.

@sandnsea2 is one of those members.

No, Dave I don't remember making that request.

If I did please remove my name.

Of course I DO want the system to check for dups.
Thanks!!

PS I do remember when I was moderating Daffodils, I asked for no dup checking on new entries, as there are valid registered duplicate Daffodil names.

I've removed you from the exception list so now you get the duplicate checking feature like everyone else. Thumbs up

Semps are on the list for duplicate watch, and I wouldn't want to be without it. Thumbs up
But there isn't such a thing when Proposals are being made.
